What are the Pros and Cons between a standard drawbar and a swinging drawbar?
I have a 1948 8n tractor, I"m going to buy a utility trailer that is 4"x 8" with 4 wheels the load capacity is 1200#. The trailer will be used to help clear off 10 acres of land, tree limbs, fire wood, dirt etc;. The 8n has already been used for bush hogging. It"s one tough tractor,I have never seen anything work like it works. Also if I buy the swinging drawbar kit(about $93) from this site, does it come with the main drawbar or is that a separate thing I will need to buy? Is there anything else I need to buy to make all of this come together? I want to thank everyone on this site for the knowledge and advice on these old work horses. My 8n would not run as good if not for this site. Dell I have learned a lot from you,Thanks. Dell do you know where Goldbar,WA. is? My two brother are up there visiting my parents on vacation.Western Washington is real pretty this time of year. redbanksdog

You are better off with the swinging drawbar,With the regular drawbar you are limited in your turning radius and may damage the hitch when turning sharp, also unless you have something to stop it,the old style drawbar likes to roll, thus damaging your trailer hitch. The kit looks like its everything you need, good luck.

redbanksdog..... .....that is NOT a swinging drawbar, is is 11-hole drawbar that mounts between the 2-lift arms with ball-joints. While you can tow certain clevis pulled horse implements with it, it is NOT a good trailer ball-hitch device because it ROTATES due to ball offset (height leverage). You can get an anti-rotating drawbar lock that will stop that but it is still NOT a good trailer tow because of the 1-way hydraulics (no down power) will LIFT when you reverse or try to back-up yer trailer.

Gitt the under the diffy swinging drawbar iff'n you want to tow a trailer around..... ....Dell

No - that is the drawbar for the Cat 1 - 3 point hitch. To use this to pull your cart with you would need stay bars that lock your 3 point from moving up or down. Without the stay bars and no down pressure on your 3 point the thing just bangs up and down when ever the cart tries to push the tractor. Swinging draw bar is a better choice in my opinion

redbanksdog..... .....yeah, Goldbar is about 2-hrs north of me, up Hwy-2, up the Skykomish river going up Stevens Pass over the Cascade Mountians over to Levenworth, the Polka town. Beautiful drive.

I strongly recommend the UNDER-the-DIFFY swinging drawbar kit for your 8N to pull trailers around. I even use it on one of my 6800# ( weighstation certified) trailers instead of hitching up my big Dodge Diesel.

According to the picture of Yesterdays Tractors on-line tractor parts store, everything is included in their swinging drawbar kit..... ..Dell

So if your trailer is 6800#, doesn't that mean a class IV hitch which in turn requires a 2 5/16 ball which has a 1" shank? How do you attach it to the swinging drawbar?

I picked up a swinging drawbar, and while its clearly nifty for towing, the 3/4" hole limits the ball to 2" (looks to me that drilling it to 1" for a 2 5/16 ball would weaken it too much). Curious to know how you got around this. I ended up getting a 2" receiver for my standard drawbar. Thanks.

Greg..... ...itza sloppy fit, but the 2-5/16" cup fits over the 2" ball. Works good enuff around my flat gravel driveway and storage areas. Obviously, NOT HI-WAY ready.

And YES, I do have a class IV chassis hitch on my 3/4T Dodge Diesel. I also have a 10k 2" drop with 2-5/16" that tows the 6800# trailer almost level. (how do I know? I have a 4" tubular line level epoxied to the trailer tongue for set-up use) and a 7k 4" drop with 1-3/4" & 2" & 2-5/16" interchangeable balls for other trailers that I tow..... ...Dell
