To SoundGuy, wherever you are.
I'm the guy with the above 8n steering problem last month. No matter what I did, if you recall, I could not get the backlash out of the right hand sector. You had suggested adding some silver solder or braze to the steering nut gear.
I ordered a new steering shaft and nut assembly, only to find that the problem was not corrected. (Worse yet, the shaft was bent on the new one). I thought about it some more and here is what I did:
I measured the off-set of the steering sector housing on the internal (male) end and it was .025. Since it rotated all the way around without removing the backlash, I gave it to my machinist buddy and asked him to move the off-set over another .025. He put it in a lathe, centered up the male end (that goes in the steering box), turned it down and pressed an oversize collar on it. Then he turned the collar down so as to move the off-set over another .025. He chose to do it this way rather than weld some extra material on the thick side so as not to harm the bushing in the sector housing with the heat from the welding.
It works just fine, and I have plenty of extra rotation for future adjustment.
Thanks for your suggestions, and I hope this works for someone else.

Glad you got it to work. If you keep it lubed.. you may never need to adjust it again.
