Do I need this resistor?

I know this comes up from time to time but I am still confused about this....

I have a 53 Golden Jubilee. I did the 12 volt conversion. When I bought the tractor last year it had a rectangular, thin, white, ceramic resistor wired inline between the negative post of the coil and the connection at the distributor.

I bought the Pertronix Ignitor Kit (#1244A) and while wiring it up I am wondering if I can get rid of this resistor?

I have a 12V coil if this matters. I have the Delco 10si alternator.

Thanks,

Paul.

NO, you do NOT need the resistor on the DISTRIBUTOR side of the coil. They NEVER go there.

If needed, they are installed between the ignition switch and the coil, with the power for the red lead from the Pertronix sourced from the IGNTION SWITCH SIDE of the ballast resistor.

What is the primary resistance of the coil???

Pertronix "specs" call for no more than 4 Amps ignition current for a 4-cylinder engine.

So, 12 Volts (the value THEY use)/4 Amps gives a coil resistance requirement of at least 3 Ohms.

So, the resistance of the coil primary MUST be at least 3 Ohms, or a ballast resistor added to the resistance value of the coil primary, for a total resistance of at least 3 Ohms.

Go to the link below, and see "
What type of coil can I use with the Ignitor".
