I rewired the 8N, just like the picture you guys posted. I did not have a diode to put in the alternator wire so I used a 194 bulb as advised. Everything worked as it should except that it won't shut off with the key. I tried putting 2 194 bulbs in the wire but it did not help. I will look at it again tomorrow. I did enjoy working on the thing most of the day. At least I didn't let the magic smoke out of anything:^)

Ron..... ....uttter terminal guy. Ya done wired yer 194 bulb to terminal #2. WRONG alternator terminal. Short wire from terminal #2 (remote voltage sense) goes to alternators BIG STUD. Ignition switch ON goes to lefthand excite terminal #1 thru yer 194 idiot-lite just like God and General Motors intended. You most likely didn't hurt yer alternator by miss-wiring them confusing side-by-side blade terminals. Ya just can't turn yer dang ignition off..... ...Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reasons

I tried it both ways, I am beginning to think I have something wrong in my alternator. I didn't want to monkey with it too much because I don't have your patented dual resistors inline with my distributor/coil yet. Nothing open around here today. Several years ago I had another 8N that had a 12 V delco alt on it but it only used one of the small spade connections, and it worked fine like that. I can't remember exactly how it was wired because I didn't keep it long.

I read it the first time, I SAID I wired it both ways, alternator is still charging too. I wired it first just like he said then when the switch wouldn"t shut it off I wired it with the other spade terminl onto the big post and put the bulb into the wire going to the ign switch on.I even tried two bulbs into the same wire thinking maybe it didn"t have enough resistance with just one. I plan on changing alternators tomorrow

Pull the 2-wire connector out of the alternator, and then see if it will shut down.

The resistance of ONE # 194 bulb in the lead from the #1 "switched excite" alternator terminal is enough to prevent it from getting enough spark, and continuing to run with the key "off".

You are missing something, and NOT following the diagram I posted EXACTLY, or you have a mis-wired or faulty igntion switch!
