I'm working on a 9n for a neighbor that hasn't run in 25 years. I got it running the other day and took it for a ride. It ran great for about 10 minutes and it died. Now it won't start. I already rebuilt the carb. It had two stuck valves, repaired them. It has spark. I checked the compresion. 50-75 psi. My question is, how low of compresion will an engine run on? What is the normal compresion on these engines? Thanks

Checked the spark, nice and bright. Used a spray bottle of gas spraying directly into carb inlet while turning engine over. Nothing. Pulled the plugs, dry. Removed the manifold, no blockage. I put my hand over carb inlet while turning it over, it draws pretty good vacuum. It almost seems like either the ignition or cam timing is way off. Is there an ignition timing mark on the crank pulley? Any info is greatly appreciated. I appolagize for my lack of knowledge on fords. I'm a 2 cylinder fan. Thanks, Andrew

Muddy..... ..unfortunately, the squarecan frontmount distributor has NO TIMING MARKS for timing lites. Infact, timing is a little weird, it is 1/4". (really) Heres a picture of how to time the frontmount distributor.

HINT: modern NO-LEAD gasoline has invisable additives that short out yer sparkies when you've flooded yer engine. And you have FLOODED yer engine, it is real eazy for neubies to flood N-Engines. Change'em. AutoLite 437's gapped 0.025 are recommended..... ....Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Tell me more about newbies flooding 2Ns easily. Ours always had a faint gassy odor but not smells strongly of gas and won"t fire up. Seems like modern gas might"ve fouled plugs...

Muddy..... ...Ford's compression specs: 90psi min (dry). Good engine about 120psi; after all, it is a low compression (6.5:1) 26hp engine. 70psi is way low and probably the cause of "stuck rings". I like Marvel Mystery Oil as a ring unsticker. One of the few additives that work. Follow instructions. Others claim ATF works well. Stuck rings are not uncommon on an engine that hassn't run for years. Besides unsticking the rings, the oil will also temporarilly increase compression and smogg all the skeeters.

As for running for about 10-mins, check yer ignition points gap (0.015), not uncommon for them to slip closed and ruin yer sparkies. You do know itza 2-bolt, 15-min job to remove the frontmount distributor and check the points on the kitchen table, don't you? The frontmount distributor is driven by an off-set tang scheme so it doesn't need to be re-timed..... ....Dell

The compression, even though a bit low, did NOT cause it to stall, when running.

Either the spark failed, or there is a restriction somewhere causing it not to get gas.

Start by checking for spark at the plugs.
