I believe the ignition switch on my 47 8N is bad.
Tries to start but can't. Using test light, I do get a light going across the switch terminals. I saw artice by Sound Guy couple of weeks ago on how to check this by using jumper wires but I can't find on archives. Need someone to point me in right direction. All help appreciated.
Thanks

If it is an OEM-type 2-wire ignition switch, simply clip a jumper wire across the 2 terminals, to bypass it, and see if the engine starts, and runs correctly.

Or, if you are touching the test light probes to both terminals on the switch, and the switch is "on", the test light should NOT be lighting.

Do any of you Nguys use any type of circuit protection on your tractors? I am speaking of fuses and breakers. I know the light switch has a fuse but what about the rest? I sure would hate to see a N burnt up.

Ron..... ..even the original dealer installed headlight switch was "un-fused". Dealer replacement headlite switches are now fused. (20-amp)

Iff'n you'll check, most all 6-volt automobiles were also un-fused. ('cept for the vibrator powered vacuum tube radio).

There is NO LAW that sez you can't do yer own fuseing, but be advised, the 6-volt ignition system is very NON-TOLERANT of voltage drops across fuses and you will gitt weak sparkies.

Remember the 6-volt MANTRA: "keep'em clean, brite'n'tite" and you won't have enny shorts that need protection by fusing..... ....Dell

It is probably a good idea to also LOOK at your wiring harness once in a while when you are doing the "clean, brite"n"tite" thing. The 52 I am working on started right up and ran great but when I looked closely at the wiring harness, I lost count after finding at least 26 breaks in the old rubber insulated wiring. Some of it had been re-taped a couple of times, but the entire harness should have been replaced a LONG time ago. The generator was working fine so when I get it back together with a new harness it will still be a 6-volt system.
