about paint?

I am trying to gather up a few things to paint the 8N with, the red cast iron is not a problem, it will be down to bare metal, as will the wheels and fenders. My worry is that dang fiberglas hood. Whoever painted this tractor before painted the hood dark grey and it peeled because it did not stick to the primer they used. The cast iron parts were all painted dark blue. One ugly tractor! What should I do to prepare that hood to paint? Sand it down to "glas and then re-prime and paint? Any tips? I looked on the paint site but didn"t see much on fiberglass.

Yes there was a fellow I think in Texas that made some fiberglass hoods and fenders for the 8N tractors, and Tisco sold them. When they were NLA, I asked Frank O'Donnell what happened and his reply was the guy said there had to be a better way to make a living.....Kelly.

"a rust prrof replacement hood." Hmmmmm...sounds interesting!!!
I can't help wondering how many of us would buy one if it was properly made, and whether it would be worth someone's making a mold. I certainly would be interested - the rust on the hood of my 9N is its only visible flaw, when I take the time to wash it.

Painting fiberglass requires a paint additive that will flex without
cracking. Also there is special fiberglass
gel coat primer to aid in adhesion.
I would use a spray striper to remove
the old flaking paint.
You should visit a car paint supplier.

If it is fiberglass, you might check with a shop that paints truck toppers.

I never heard of a fiberglass hood on an N . If you're sure its fiberglass I'd check with a body shop to get some ideas . God bless , Ken

Fiberglass hood? What kind of tractor do you have? No N tractors had a fiberglass hood.

Folks keep telling me that, but.....thats what it is. I just got this 8N a week or so ago. I thought it was strange that the hood did not fit right around the radiator but thought maybe some one had done some "glass work on the hood to cover up rust damage. I removed the hood and dropped the gas tank, removed the side panels (they were steel) and discovered the hood itself to be fiberglass and light as a feather. This is a 1949 8N from the serial # and all other aspects. I am 56 yrs old and have been around N series for a long time. I worked for a Ford tractor dealership in Jasper Texas for 3 years. I am no novice at this, am just telling you what I got:^)
It is fiberglass, I have done a lot of minor "glas work in my time and have to say that whoever built this did a good job.

Either someone made a "one of-" or at some point in time, someone was 're-popping' in f-glass as a rust prrof replacement hood.

Good luck on the paint!
