OK, I have no idea. I'm restoring a '48 8N. After 6 years of problem free service I thought I'd reward it with a restoration. Everything is in pretty good shape. One of the last things I did was to prep the water pump for painting. I decided to take the pulley off to make it easier to wire brush. Anyway, I take the pulley off and, much to my surprise, I find a hole in the casing. This isn't an accidental hole either. Someone ground this hole on purpose. I have no idea why anyone would want to do this. I also can't understand why I never had a problem with overheating. You can see the impeller through this hole so, there would have been no prime or water circulation. I also can't understand why my water level was never really that low but then, I'll have to go back out and look at how high the pump actually sits in realtionship to the radiator. Does anyone have any idea why someone might have wanted to do this?

Most water pumps have a weep hole in them. If the pump bearing starts to go bad and water gets into the bearing it leaks out of this hole. Weird
but true. You think this is your hole?

Stump, I think the weep hole is usually next to the water pump bearing seal and should this seal fail, the leak will be to the outside and not directly into the bearing which would cause the bearing to lock up and could cause the pressed on hub to spin off.

Bal, if you could see the impeller, then the water pump would be leaking. Should be two holes, a round one to let any water out that passes by the seal and probably an enlongated hole to access the ring that retains the brg. I am not 100% sure,so maybe wait for someone that has rebuilt one lately.

I didn't say how big the hole was so, a weep hole would be a good guess. This ain't no weep hole. Its oval, about 3/8" long x 1/4" wide. Its a big hole. The replacement pump I got in the mail yesterday has no such hole so somebody must have cut it. I just can't figure out how I ever had any water circulation but never overheated. Its the craziest thing I've ever seen. If someone can tell me how to attach a photo to a post, I'll send one.
