Hi Guys and Gals, Have a question or 2 about my auger. I need to put some posts in the ground and want to make sure I have this hooked up right.
How do I connect the auger to my ORC? With a roll pin? If that's it what size do I need? Im going to TSC saturday so now would be they time to get the right part. Here is the set up:
third party image

My other question is the hole in the auger is larger then my pin is this ok? If not what could I do about it?

third party image

Here is a pic of the complete setup.

What kind of lube should be in its gear case?

Thanks,
Ill post back with my results and include a video clip Sean

Where are you located at in tx? If you are anywhere close to north tx call Greenville tractor supply 9034544824. They can get pretty much any tractor or implement part you need and will probably ship them to you if needed. Call and let Betty or Wyman take care of you.

Im 30 miles north of San Antonio...According to google earth, Greenville, TX is 313 miles north east of here. Guess I could get a Slide Caliper. Be fun giving them the measurements over the phone.

I have that same PHD unit and it works pretty well on my 2N. In your pic #1 you show 'Roll Pin Here?'. No, it does not need a roll pin there. Instead, do you see that other pin thing that is right nearby that spot? That pin is supposed to slide back and forth (about a half inch)in its hole. In one direction it locks into the groove on your PTO Shaft and in the other direction it is free so you can install or remove it from PTO shaft. You might have to put some pentrating on the pin and then work it back and forth some to free it up.

Im going to look for a new drive shaft today. The U-joints are going bad and it has lots of welds on the shaft.

I notice that your tractor is either a 2-N or a 9-N. If you would get a position control, I believe it would help also. You would have better control on letting the auger down. Zane sells one that works real well or there are pictures that show how to make one. B. Jones

Position control is on my shopping list. I was looking the PHD over this morning I think the U-Joints are on the last leg.

Sean..... ...picture #1, while you could possibly haffta use a 5/16" roll-pin as labled, it should NOT BE NECESSARY because at the 12o'clock position of yer pix is a "bump" that is supposed to be a spring loaded "lock'em" button that should fit into yer PTO shaft's lock'em-notch.

More important is the fittment of the auger shaft splines to the PTO splines. Yer 9N came from the factory with 6-spline 1-1/8 PTO shaft and many modern PTO shaft sockets are 6-spline 1-3/8" PTO. Your already installed brushhogg ORC adaptor could be also a 1-1/8 to 1-3/8 adaptor at the same time. Iff'n not, they make and sell forged adaptors and also weaksister sheetmetal sleeve adaptors. Iff'n yer unsure, measure across yer splines and go shopping. It will be intuitive obvious iff'n splines don't fitt.

Pix #2..... .same with yer 3-point toplink connection. The auger end is dual-sized. Cat-2 and is sleeved down by a bushing to 3/4" cat-1, the size of yer 9N. You need to go shopping for sleeve. ($1, cheap)

Pict #4..... ..shows a round hole along the auger gearbox. That is for a 1/2"? pipe guide lever that is supposted to be long enuff to reach from yer tractor buckett seat so you can aim yer auger into the soil as you let yer 3-point hydraulic "hy-trol" lever lower yer auger into the soil.

Remember, there is NO REVERSE. so iff'n yer "un-luckey" and catch a root or rock just-sew, you will screw yer auger into the ground and yer tractor front wheels will be "flappin innna breeze". You will then have the pleasure of hand diggin' the biggest posthole you ever thought possible (don't ask how I know)

ALSO: have plenty of spare grade-2 shear-bolts to hold yer auger shaft sleeve to yer gearbox. You'll haffta measure the size you need. They are supposed to break instead of yer gearbox. Understand?

As for gearbox LUBE, probably 90wt or 140wt. Usually NOT CRITICAL as long as you have enuff.

Remember, all them moveing parts are DANGERIOUS. Slow engine RPMS is all that is necessary. Raise the auger frequently to clean-out the spoils. ..... ...Dell, yer self-appointed safety preacher

Thanks Dell...I have never taken the OCR off. I do know the auger fits perfect on the OCR its a 6-spline 1-3/8"..
I didnt know about the pipe guide....I guess I can get that in the plumbing department. Ill get the right sleave for that pin to. This forum is great. If you dont know the answer someone else does!!! I doubt the auger will dig in and pull my front wheels up...Almost solid rock around here. But I could find a dirt pocket..So ill take it slow.. I will post my results...

Thanks....

if its solid rock do you think the PH digger will even work, tyhe rock is where you get hug up not the dirt, the auger wedges itself between the earth and the rock , or rock and rock and twirls itself in. I find when you hit a rock it will either sit on top and just spin not do anythng, or will cock to one side and go in sideways and maybe jam, good luck be safe, pat

Thats a rock bit!! I'd love to have one here. My dirt bit does good in this soft white rock, but that would be better. You hit a home run on that buy. You'll want a solid steel rod for the pressure down device, but may not need it with that bit unless you got hard rock. DON TX

Dell posted "You will then have the pleasure of hand diggin' the biggest posthole you ever thought possible (don't ask how I know)" HA HA I don't have to ask how he knows, it's the same way I know, I got lucky and was able to unscrew it with a long pipe after running a water hose in the hole:^) Live and learn!

You should be able to find a bushing to fit take the slop out of the top link pin, TSC should have it. If I remember right, 90# gear oil is what mine recommended, sorry, mine is down the road or I'd check. I used the outboard gear oil, it comes in a plastic squeeze bottle. It looks like the pto is hooked alright. Is the push pin working or is it a bolt in the offset near the front of the spline? Since my push pin is missing on mine, I put a linch pin in it. TSC may have a linch pin or replacement push pin. You could put a roll pin in it, but if the forward pin is holding ok, I wouldn't worry. HTH
