First of all, let me say that there are any number of sites where I might get an answer to my question, but frankly, I don't really have much confidence in their answers. I have asked for advice on this board for several years now about a myriad of things and have gotten some really useful info. Anytime I have a question about any subject, I think of you first. I thank you all for that..

My question has to do with bathroom scales. The one we have is broken. It used to work well. I could get on and it would read 175 lbs everyday. But here lately, it is error prone and yesterday, it said 205. Time to get a new scale.

I've been looking at several types. Most of them today are digital, but some are still the old fashioned mechanical type with the Sweep hand. Anyone know how the digital scale works? Are the inner workings really any different from the mechanical sweep hand type? Do digital scales depend on springs, gravity or is there a counter-balance (which I personally think is more exacting)?
digitals are the least expensive. I've Seen them for as little as $10 and as much as $80. Is the $80 really that much better? I know the old saying "you get what you pay for", but if that were true in this case, then I should get another "mechanical type" as they are now $40-100 ea. and I just think that the newer digital scale being more modern is probably a little more accurate. Thanks in advance for any information..Ron Ps: Yes, I am getting bigger in the waist, but at the same time, I getting shorter so I think the weight should remain the same. Don't you?

I just put a piece of tape over the dial and wrote my correct weight on it. It works well for me

Had the same thing happen to me. Mechanical type scale with a needle.

What I did is remove all weight from the scale, then using a drill bit (about the same size as a round toothpick) I drilled a hole thru the dial at about the spot that is my correct weight. I then inserted the toothpick in the hole.

When I step on the scale the needle stops at the toothpick, this insures that the scale is correctly reading my weight.

Are you sure you want a new one? Open the old one up and super glue the pointer to where you want it to read. simple and cheap

Stand on as many in the store as you can. Find an average reading then buy the scale you like that reads closest to the average. Thats kinda how I buy thermometers.I look at them all and buy the one that reads in the middle of the pac.

Does it read 0 when you're not standing on it?
Does a gallon bottle of water placed on it show a weight of about 8 pounds?
There is usually a little adjustment screw on it that will take it back to 175 pounds but it might read less than zero when you're not standing on it. You might do what Red Green did to fix that problem -- he just filled his pockets with helium so he could get his weight down. (I think that he puffed out so much that he could not get into his van.) Try testing the scales at a store see iffn you get 175 (plus all the clothing/knives/tools/shoes you're wearing). ( I do not recommend testing the scales at the stores while naked).

Yes a digital scale uses a "spring" but its spring is just a big bar of metal with a strain gage on it.

The best kind of scale is a balance scale with the movable weights on it. Like in a doctors office or Weight Watchers.

Now this is one of the things I like about reading this forum, is that I learn so many useful things. I had been worried lately about the way my scale shows my weight changing, and of course I've been under stress and so eating more chocolate. And cake. And white gravy on biscuits. But I know I burned all that up in nervous energy and those 20-hour back-to-back workdays, so I just could not figure it out. Now I know: THE SCALE IS BROKEN!! Duh! How did I NOT see that!!

Thank you, RoN!!! Of course I can't get a new scale right now, but it means I can sure stop getting on that broken one. What a relief!

:-D

Dawn (who really knows nothing about bathroom type scales and so can't post anything meaningful ... but then, that's my M.O.! LOL)
