My ol' 9N was running fine when i shut 'er off but a day or two later when I fired her up the exaust noise was considerable louder. Could an exaust valve be stuck? I wouldn't think I burnt or sucked one that quick. Suggestions and solutions appreciated. Thansk John

Internal mechanical failures like a burned or dropped valve usually show up while you are working. Usually, there are always exceptions to every general statement like that. But, since you first noticed the problem after it had time to cool down, I would look for things like a blown gasket or cracked manifold. A common place for problems is erosion around the number 4 exhaust port where the manifold seals to the head. Or the number 1 exhaust tube on some manifolds can break completly loose from the flange where it bolts to the head, especially if someone doubled up on the gaskets and overtightened the bolts trying to get it to seal. How old is the muffler? Maybe it is just time to replace it.

You can always try the dollar bill trick at the muffler.

Also.. you can pull the valve covers for a looksee.

if it isn't bad.. try running some MMO in the gas and a little in the ol and do a service on her.. see what you get.

Thanks for the replys. The oil looked fine and I"ll check the radiator this weekend. I"ve been working her pretty hard trying to build up a berm with the box blade but the last time I ran her before the noise it was a leasurely evening stroll around the woods and down to the pond. She was really running sweet. It was running so quietly, as a matter of fact that I surprised a bobcat down at the stream. There is nothing easier on the mind than a slow tractor stroll thru nature with a cold beer. Thanks for the help. John G.
