I went today to pick up some parts that I ordered from a local parts dealer. I was told something by the salesperson about Tisco paint that doesn't make sense.

He said that Tisco paints use a Naptha thinner which also contains hardner. That doesn't sound right to me because I think hardner and thinner are always two separate products that are not combined. The dealer didn't have the colors I need in stock except in rattle cans. I plan on ordering the paint to use with a spray gun.

Can someone with experience tell me about Tisco paints, what thinner to buy and what hardner? Also does it tell you on the can the mixing ratio? Should I order an entire gallon of Red and Gray for an 8n?

Thanks,
Scott

Scott...I never heard of thinner & hardener in the same product. I've used Tisco & TSC paints, both w/ naptha thinner & Valspar hardener. I was happy w/ the results on both paints, but as you said, the Tisco is a little higher technology coating.

As I recall, the Valspar hardener calls for 8 to 1 mix ratio(it's listed on the can).

My painting skills are C+ maybe, but in my case the Tisco seems to run more easily than the oil-based TSC.

I've used TISCO paint with Naptha thinner and Valspar hardener. Mix ratio for the hardener was on the can. It worked good for me and I had very little experience spraying paint.

I just used TISCO paint on my 9. Will not be able to let you know for a few years how it holds up. Go to your local auto parts store look, ask for paint mixing cups. they have several sizes . These "cups" are marked for the correct mixes. I use 4-1-1 ratio( it will be marked on cup) fill cup to mark with paint , then reducer to coresponding mark, then hardner to next mark.. This cup will give you the same ratio every time no matter what the amount you want to use. My friend, uses more hardner / less reducer.
Note :: reducers are NOT the same; they are sensitive to temperature changes. Ask at NAPA or your local dealer. Way over my head on this. joe

Hardener TISCO # TP12 Acrylic hardener, I never sprayed TISCO paint so kin not recommend a thinner. The gray izz a good match, the red izz close but not a good paint. If I were gonna spray it I would use NAPA paint, I have the match fer the gray will have to look it up. I use CNH IH 2150 red with NAPA reducers and hardener, the same I use with the NAPA gray paint.
You gonna git quite a few replies and what they use werks fer"em and proven so its you call.

For what it's worth. My experience is limited to my open-air paint booth. But, a few years ago when I mixed CaseIH paint with naptha thinner, it got a little funny looking. The next batch I used CaseIH thinner and it mixed much better.
I use 1qt paint, 3oz thinner and 2oz hardner. Seems to work for me.

Hobo, do you think that TISCO paint is not good in general? Or did you just mean that the red is not good? I've heared that TISCO is one step above TSC paint, it's definately more expensive.

I was thinking at first about using TSC IH red on my 8n, and using Rustoleum to mix the gray recipe that someone listed on here. Then I saw the gray at the parts dealer, and that it was an almost perfect match. They also sold TEMPCO paints, but I didn't have a sample of the colros. The more I look at all these paints the more confusing it gets.

On my last tractor, I used PPG paint. It is good paint but I do not want to spend that much money on this paint, but still want good quality. I appreciate all your responses.

The red did fade it took 3 years. Enny economy red will fade you git what you pay for. It does cover and flow extremely well. I never used it in hot weather only when its cold out ( winter projects) and it does take awhile to dry. The gray has held up well. TISCO paint does apply with a brush ‘bout as good as I have used for that no thinner needed for that application. The one I used it on izz a werker so I guess it has done its job. Can reads thinning use TPS46 from TISCO. Ask over on the paint and body werk forum what you need to cut it with to spray. I understand were you are coming from and I also kin not see mega bucks on a tractor paint job.

I don"t know about Tisco paint but I do know that I generally use thinner and hardner with my paint from Napa. I will not paint something around here without using a hardner, it just works better for me. I used about a half gallon of both on mine but I am not an expert by any means.

Hope their paint is better than their parts. If not, do not leave it out in a rain or all the paint will be on the ground.

Yes, very poor quality stuff..Bought a new distributor, would not turn in the bushings..smething jammed and out of alignment. Being New I was not going to mess with it..took it back and got another new one, weights on the spark advance were dragging in the case causing it to not work..Took it back got another one..Thought I had checked it the best I could at the store but decided to pull over on the side of the road and check it out.Distrib. cap would not clip on at all..One of the spring clips was bent so bad(oe not bent enough) to hold any pressure on the cap//Took it back and let them do the bending to make it work....Tisco obviously don't know what quality means...
