I reassembled the carb, re installed on tractor, re adjusted the screws. The idle is about 450RPM with the idle mixture backed out about 3/4 turn. The high speed screw continues to be a problem, has to be out 7 turns or more to run right at WOT. I removed the governor, it looks to have been replaced at some time in the past. There is no groove where the balls would hang and everything there is in excellent shape. The spring adjustment may be a little off but that is not creating the high speed adjusting screw problem. I tried using propane, wd40 and even choke cleaner to find a vacuum leak with no leak being found. I have ruled out a clogged anything in the carb. I think I may try removing the high speed jet altogether and run it with just the nozzle and see how it does.I adjusted the timing in both diretions without it helping anything. I had checked for blue spark last night with clamp-on dummy spark plug. Nothing wrong there.I began to question the airflo thru the intake, engine, exhaust and thought if the mix can't flo out it won't flo in right either. I removed the muffler/tailpipe and saw nothing restricting the exhaust. It sure sounds like I may have an internal vacuum leak either in the manifold or maybe between cylinders. My mind says manifold because it does not miss. Maybe leaking between exhaust/intake or be burned thru. I sprayed PB Blaster on the bolts, will examine it tomorrow also. On a positive note I did resolve my third gear (or lack of 3rd gear) problem. Someone had removed the old manual starter button from the shift cover and installed a 1/2 inch bolt with washers in its place. They had the little bracket that goes under the start button bolted in place but had it turned wrong and the shifter would not engage into 3rd. A simple adjustment there fixed it. I am gaining a little every day.

The fact that you have to run with so much of the main jet adjustment open make me susupect the the pressure balance passage in your carb is clogged or somewhat restricted. There is a drilled hole in the airhorn near the choke valve that vents the fuel bowl to the air horn. This allows the fuel/air ratio to be unaffected by the air cleaner restriction and is a feature on all modern carburetors including your M-S. Make sure that your's is not clogged

Sounds like you are tracking it down. Most of the folks on this forum are just really good people, that is the main reason I keep coming back to see what is going on.

Good to see you here James. I have been so busy tinkering with this thing I have not checked in there very often, I probably missed a bunch. You take care.
