2N Electrical trouble

I have a 2N with a recently rebuilt generator and a newer battery. The generator only wants to put out enough to keep the tractor running but will not charge the battery and the headlights are very dim. Now after running for a while it just loses everything and dies. I can jump it and get it started again but within a few minutes it quits. Last week I was playin around and suddely it came to life, bright headlights and cranking without a jumper. This only lasted for a few minutes. Does anybody have any ideas?

Problem solved, thanks for all the help. We disassembled and cleaned up the generator, which got it to begin charging. Then took the battery in to be tested and found it to have dead short. This took care of all of everything.

Thanks again guys,
Brian

BTStopar..... ...why does..... ."Last week I was playin around and suddely it came to life, bright headlights and cranking without a jumper. This only lasted for a few minutes"..... ..make me think yer 6-volt 1-wire 3rd-brush genny has stuck "brush issues" or loose internal connections?

The 6-volt 2N-battery has enuff guttz to power the sparkies for several days of running without the 11-amp genny recharging the battery. Iff'n you don't know how good yer 6-volt battery is, take it into a good battery shop for a "free" checkout. That is worth yer time and trouble.

You do know that YOU ARE THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR for yer 2N's 3-brush genny, don't you? And you must manually adjust the 3rd-brush screw on the backplate of yer genny for about 3-amps charge at 1/2-throttle with full electrical load. Remember, yer electrical load changes iff'n yer headlites are ON or OFF. So you haffta re-adjust yer genny 3rd-brush everytime you turn yer headlites ON or OFF..... UNDERSTAND?

Remember the 6-volt MANTRA: "keep'em clean and brite'n'tite"..... ...Dell

The generator is only puttin out 1.5 - 1.7 amps no matter how it's adjusted. I also read that when the genny is rebuilt (mine was rebuilt last year) the end of the armature is greased, when first run this grease tends to liquify and coat everything insulating it and preventing it from charging. What do you think?

Does it still have the original six volt generator with the cut out?

If so use a jumper wire to go around the cutout with the tractor running to see if that will make it charge. If so you may need to replace the cutout.
