Mine just did that and it was the metal strap going from the solinoid to the motor. (opposite from the battery cable.) Cleaned it up then OK.

Tewell..... ....yer description of problem is semi-confusing because 8N's with 3-terminal starter mounted solenoid started production in fall of 1947 actavated by BIG thumb switch neutral safety interlocked by the tranny shifter.

A true 1946 tractor would be a 2N-tractor with 2-terminal steering gearbox mounted manually actavated jigglestick neutral safety interlocked starter SWITCH mounted on the lower dashpanel.

Understand the difference?

I am going to assume your solenoid reference is correct. The solenoid is actavated by GROUNDING the little middle terminal by the BIG thumb switch by trannys shifter. A clever mechanic could ground eather end of the solenoil wire (TRANNY in NEUTRAL) with a screwdriver to verify that the problem isn't the BIG thumb switch. Did I remember to tell you TRANNY in NEUTRAL????

My basic thoughts based upon yer description is that eather or both yer battery cable clamps have invisable corrosion that need to be burnished (scraped clean) but most likey yer battery clamps have INTERNAL corrosion that requires NEW CABLES. $10 (cheap) I recommend a 12"long flatbraid ground cable that will reach one of yer steering gearbox castiron mounted bolts instead of the short OEM flatbraid that is bolted to yer rusty sheetmetal battery tray. Battery to starter solenoid cable MUST BE 1-ga (thick as yer thumb) Don't gitt enny them-tharr wimpy ferrin' 12-volt skinny cables.

I also recommend un-bolting yer starter motor 8" screws for about 1/4" gap and WIREBRUSH between the starter plate and the tranny housing hole. Understand?

My eazy starting 6-volt '52-8N starter sings when I push the button. Yours can too. Remember the 6-volt MANTRA: "keep'em clean, and brite'n'tite"..... ...Dell
