Transmission Shift Pattern, Reinstall problem

Hey all,

I worked on the transmission in my "48 8n today. I got it all reassembled, but am having some problems getting all the gears to shift. When I put the top plate on just to see what was going on, it would "shift" into reverse, but no other gears.

I understand that all the gears have to be in a certain position for the coupler to slide with the forks by use of the shifting plates. I can move the shift plates by hand. The bottom plate will go in the middle, up, and down positions. The upper plate will only go in the down position. The top slide rail and fork will slide between all three positions. I can turn the input shaft by hand in most positions until it locks up and won"t turn. I have to turn it a little back and forth, and the plates will normally pop back into the center position.

Can someone give me some pointers on how to get them in a position that all the gears will shift properly?

Thanks!!
Scott

Scott,
Most common cause of your problem is the shifter not coming back all the way to center. Either the detent balls on the rails are gummed up or worn or the lower end of the shifter stick is worn. Last one ya don't wanna hear cause it's gears that are worn.
Just hafta look and see what it's supposed to do to allow the shifts, and what it's doing wrongly. May be as cheap as wiggling the stick around to get stuff centered (the "magic touch") or finding an offending part and replacing it.

Russ,

Thanks for the message. I'll just have to go back and try to figure out what's going wrong. The shifter stick comes back to center without a problem, so it seems to me like the other stuff is just not aligned right just yet.

Thanks again,
Scott

Scott,
A couple of past problems with shifters have been a broken/missing pin (part 7221) illustrated just below the boot and broken rivets holding the "box" to the bottom of the cover. Can you pull the shifter stick up like it wants to pull up out of the transmission?
Another was a part reinstalled backwards. It was one of the parts on the bottom of the cover that guide the bottom end of the stick, but I don't recall which part it was. About the only ones possible would be the lock (7229) or the safety latch support (7257).
I'd like to hear what you find.
Russ

I worked on it a little bit today. The problem seemed to be that I had to get both the countershaft and mainshaft lined up to where the coupling would slide in all three positions at the same time. Either one shaft would, but the other wouldn't. After working with it, I got both shafts in a position that the shifter would slide the rails/fork/coupling all at the same time.

I can get it to shift into all gears now. However I don't like the way it shifts into 2nd and 4th. It's like it doen't go in gear all the way. I looked at the end of my shifter and it has been brazed once before. I think there is a little too much metal that I'm going to have to file away. Once I have filed it down a little more, and given it a more "rounded ball" shape, I think it should shift just fine.

Thanks again for the input.
Scott
