Won't start after replacing Exhaust Manifold Gaske

Replaced the Exhaust Manifold Gaskets on my '49 8N and now it just cranks when I try to start it. Lights come on, so have battery juice. I can't recall if the Amp Meter normally registers when the engine is cranked, cause it's not moving at all now when I try to start it - should it? It registers when I turn the lights on.

During the repair, all I did was move the Generator out of the way (didn't disconnect any wiring), disconnected the gasline into the Carb, removed the Tube from the Carb to the Air Cleaner, and replaced the coolant. Everything is back in place like before I started. Spark plug boots are all firmly seated. Tractor started with no problems before I replaced gaskets!

I verified that I'm getting gas to the Carb (gas flows when I loosen the line into the Carb). Verified that the gasline screen (elbow) coming into the Carb is clear of debris. Since I don't know much about troubleshooting electrical, I'm not sure how to verify if I'm getting spark to the plugs, etc. Strange that something electrical died just because I fooled with the exhaust. Or could the Carb be the issue? The choke mechanism works fine. I've tried starting over a period of a week, so doubt it's because of flooding. Any recommendations?

How careful were you with the carb when you had the manifold off?
An old timer told me never never lay a carb on it's side or tip it over when you have it off the engine. Any kind of junk in the float bowl will get into the jets and require you to clean it.
If you have good spark and it still wont run I'd ask myself how careful were you with it while you had it off.
Good luck
Jerry

Thanks for the thought - didn't move the carb at all.

Rich..... ...you write..... ."I've tried starting over a period of a week, so doubt it's because of flooding"..... ..guess again. You've flooded yer sparkies ennyways. Replace 'em with NEW DRY sparkies, AutoLite 437 gapped 0.025.

Heres the deal, modern "no-lead" gasoline leaves INVISABLE deposits from flooding an lets them lazy sparkies leak to ground instead of jumping the gap, igniting the fuel mixture. After you gittchur engine running, you can "clean" yer flooded sparkies one-atta-time by swapping out enny eazy to gitt-too sparkie. The heat of combustion will burn off the deposits, and you will have a "spare" set of cleaned & dried sparkies for the nextime you flood. (and there will be a next time, trust me)..... ....Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Thank you Gentlemen for your assistance....I totally forgot about a key item - and I think Dell may be on to it.....when I first attempted to start the tractor after the work, I failed to realize that the tube between the carb and the air cleaner wasn't properly connected. The air cleaner end did not have a seal at all. I had attempted to start it several times during that configuration. So, I'm looking forward to putting new plugs in to see if that solves the problem!

To check spark, stick a phillips screw driver in spark plug wire, and short to ground while turning over engine. Look for a spark. To see if cylinders are getting fuel, pull spark plug, and see if it is wet.

Haven't you guys ever heard of using the right tool for the right job. A phillips screwdriver was not designed nor built as a spark plug tester. I know it works, and no doubt it works well but you could get shocked really bad with that screwdriver as it may not be well insulated. Besides that, it's hard to reach around to the starter button and hold the screwdriver close enough and steady enough and still see the spark.
Here is a much better solution, it worked for me!

I pulled the plug wire off the plug, pulled the rubber boot back so the metal connector was easy to access and told my wife "here honey, hold this for me will ya?"

just kiddin' I check mine with a screwdriver too:^)

Take a spare spark plug, open the gap to about 3/16", then clamp it to the engine with a Vice Grip, put one of the spark plug wires on it, crank the engine, and look for spark. If no spark, after the work you did, most likely, something has been knocked loose in the wiring so there's no primary voltage to the coil, or the coil has been bumped around, and the little coiled "spring thingy" on the base of the coil is not properly seated down into the special brass screw down beneath it, in the distributor.

The coiled "spring thingy" on the bottom of the coil can be carefully stretched a little to make better contact, if needed.
