1948 8N front mount distributor. No fire past coil. Fire to coil, fire to spring tip on coil. No fire to distributor wire towers.

There is a long dissertation from a Chris Von Fange on pulling the distributor and replacing the points. It doesn't seem to be descriptive of the front mount distributor. I think the points are stuck but even with a mirror it is almost impossible to see the points.

Do you have instructions on how to replace and set points that apply to a 1948 Ford 8N front mount distributor that has been converted to a 12 volt system?

What these guys are instructing about removing the distributor is the best way to install or set points. And the best part about it is you don't have to worry about getting it out of time. It will only go in one way. I have learned alot of time saving tips from this forum. There are a lot of knowledgeable folks on here.

Mrsaleco..... ...it doesn't matter, 6 or 12-volts, setting the ignition points of the frontmount distributor is the same; 0.015". The points are BEST SET by removing the entire frontmount distributor and doing it on the kitchen table. Itza 2-bolt, 15-minute procedure. Just unsnap yer 4-nipple distributor cap and letter dangle. Then un-bolt-it. Simple, eh?

Installation is a reversal of the removal. Just gently finger start the 2-bolts and then twirl yer distributor rotor until it falls into the OFF-SET slot and then tighten yer 2-bolts. Because of the OFF-SET design, you can NOT install outta time. Understand?..... ..respectfully, Dell

The front mount distributor is made to come off the tractor to replace the points. Remove the wire to the coil, slide the bail off the coil, remove the coil. Then, remove the distributor cap. Two bolts hold the distributor to the block. Remove the distributorfrom the tractor. Replace the points, gap to .015 on all 4 lobes, and the condenser & rotor. Make sure you do not ground the condenser wire to the distributor housing. Pull the pigtail on the coil a bit to make better contact. The distributor base has an offset tang making it almost impossible to re-install correctly. Check the cap for cracks and carbon tracking; make sure the nipple on #2 is not busted off. (If it is, that's another problem; let us know & you will get help to fix that). Get it all back together & see if it starts.

Dad, When it is cracked as you mentioned, it normaly is the result of worn King Pin, Pivot bushing and possibly Radius rod connections on each end worn. It normaly happens when a sharp turn is made and maybe a bump is hit at the same time. The Center Axle swings back and hits the Cap, resulting in a cracked cap. Typical solution is to drop the front end and replace the King Pin and bushing and maybe the bolts holding the radius rod to the Axle and bush up the other end where it connects to the engine. Some people just set the front end out wider. I have to mention that when it happened to one of my 9N's the front end was set out to its maximum. So? About a 2-4 hour job depending on your ability. You have yours apart so it is no problem to do it now. Good luck. Ron

Bruce,

Got my tractor in a couple hundred pieces right now, not quite a true restoration but more along the lines of a cleaning, repair whats broke and repaint. Noticed the #2 nipple on the distributor cap cracked, as in your reply to the above. So what gives there?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

If the right side radius rod is bent and/or the king pin is worn, the right side front axle will bite off your #2 nipple on the distributor crab cap. Don't ask how I know.....

Thanks- makes sense. The radius arm is straight but the king pin was shot whan I disassembled it. Problem solved!

Chris
