Yes, I'm a novice. Had my 52 8N for a year now. Mowed several acres all last year and several times this year. I've posted a few "newbie" questions and they've all been answered with great info. My tractor runs great and I thought it would be awhile for the problematic questions. But, this weekend, my tractor started sputtering and sounding weird. My first thoughts were to get to this board and seek help. When the tractor quickly died and wouldn't start, I thought harder - yep, I REALLY need help. Then the bigger thought hit me.... OUT OF GAS!

Had a similar cituation last weekend after changing my plugs. I was all ready and excitied about hitting the starter button to hear her fire and nothing happened. Well i checked this and that and double checked to make sure i turned the key and then remembered that i hit the hidden kill switch on her also. Good thing i didn't wear down the battery trying to get her started because i did not have my battery charger with me. Maybe i should learn how to jump her with a 12 battery. Oh well, all is fun 8nnnnn . Paul

I had the same thing happen to me a month ago, but I still had gas in the tank. Turns out it had dropped below the level where the intake will allow it to flow out when the shutoff valve is at the "main" setting. Once I opened the valve all the way to tap into the reserve the sputtering went away. The sputtering was worse going uphill in reverse because the gas would slosh forward in the tank. Nice to have these easy solutions to our problems...
