My 49 8n front mount distibutor is running like a top. Runs so good, it got me hooked and I bought another one.

I got a 52 8n front mount with the round coil for $1,000. My 49 has the square can 4 nipple type. Therefore, I am not familair with this round can front mount at all. Any comments about this type?

It is in even better condition than my other one, only thing is the hydraulics dont work at all on this new one. Figured this would be the chance to get my hands dirty with the hydraulics for the first time. Was $1,000 a good buy for a 52 with all gears working except hydraulics broke (inspected engine and looked for leaks, looks great)?

1. The position/draft handle below to the right of the seat is stuck in the up position. PTO will turn but hydraulics dont move at all. Now I am sure the first thing I need to do is pull the cover and look inside. Howvever, which cover do I want to remove?... the side or the top? For intial inspection will I need have the tractor running or can I tell anythign from it cut off?
2. This 52 has the original 6 volt generator electrical system. However, there is only one wire coming off the generator going to the voltage regulator. That cant be right can it? The guiy had to jumper it off. Pretty sure soemhtign isnt right with electrical system. These generators have to have three wires coming off to charge the battery properly dont they? This one wire goes to a circular regulator which looks almost like the solenoid. Really wierd. I assume with all the different type regulators this could be one type. Is it the original?

A few other bolts and such forth are missing. As soon as I get some time I am going o start working on her.

What do you guys and girls think?

Dumb question, but for starters, did you check your fluid level? If you're low, the hydraulics won't work even if the PTO is running.

I paid $900 for a non-running 1951 side mount. After deciding not to do a major engine rebuild (which is what I found it needed) I was able to part it out and so far I'm ahead about $1,000 with a few parts left to sell.

Anyone need a trans case, rear section, differential or rear axle? How about a pair of loaded tires on hat rims or an engine block? Oil pan, anyone? In other words, all I have left is the hard to ship stuff.

$1,000 for a running 8N is a steal. You done good.

If its a 1952 it should be a side monut distubutor no a front mount, unless some one swaped engines in it but you also say round can coil so what do you have a front mount or side mount. The sdie monut came out in late 50 and went till 52.

Maybe I am confused.

It has a round top like the side mount but it comes out of the front. Where the side mount shoulde be, it is the welded blank spot.

Thats what is called the side mount. You can change the points etc with out removeing the distubutor right?? It still sits up front but sort of lays out the side also

That is it. It is on the front but lasy out to the side. I thought that would be a frotn mount.

I thought all the side mounts came out of the block above and to the right of the governor.

So I have a side mount.

Well now you know the differance in a front mount and side mount on the 8N tractors. Both are up front but one is out to the side like your 52 is. The sdie mount is a better set up then the front since its easier to work on as far as checking the points etc. Also the point gap is differant on that then your other tractor. The side mount the points are set at .025 and the front at .015.

What is the blank for in the block above the carbureator and to the right for?

Is that from casting?

I had to go out and look on my 1950 8N to know what you where asking and I can only take an educated guess on that. Since the engine in the 8Ns etc where also used in other things it was for a fuel pump if thats the place your talking about. It sort of looks like the shape of a fuel pump like what is on a car engine right??

It comes out to the side and has the round top.

Howevevr, it is conected to the front.

I thought side mounts had to extend out of the block above and to the right ofd the carbureator.

Front mounts I thought were to the left of the governor on the front.

It is in front of the governor (radiator side) but it comes out to the side of the tractor.

Maybe I am confused and it actually is a side mount.

SCgoatfarmer, now, about that lever,
Do you mean the quad lever? (The big one) Or the draft control lever? (The little one.) Both are under the seat on the right side. I ask 'cause the quad lever on my '49 8N is in the down position and will only move about 20 degrees. The lift, of course, doesn't work. If we're having the same problem, I'd also like to hear what the sages say.
