I have a Jubilee and when I brush hog, it will cough and die. If I hold the choke open 1/2 way, it will run but it still does not like the load from the brush hog. Any ideas? Thanks as always.

Rickstir..... ..check yer firing order of yer 5-nipple cap. Its eather 1,2,4,3 CCW or 1,2,4,3 CW (I can't remember whichway right now, CRS I guess) Usually the 4&3 wires are swapped. These old tractor engines are sooooo gooood that they will run on just 2-cylinders until you load'em with work like a brushhog. Choking with just 2-cylinders working will add some power..... ....Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

I always recommend that you check the spark first. You should have a fat, bluish spark whenyou try to start. Pull the high tension lead off the center of the distributor and hold it near a good ground with the key on and try a start. You should have a fat, bluish spark. If you don't, find out why.(Bad points, bad point setting, bad wiring/key switch, loose connections, bad coil, etc).If you have fat, bluish spark, then check the timing and make sure that it's set right and that the advance is working correctly.

Once you have the ignition squared away, then look at the fuel system. Getting the engine to run better by pulling on the choke can make it run better for two reasons: 1)weak sparks light richer mixtures better than lean mixtures, and 2)an air leak down stream of the carb metering section can lean the mixture. The causes of the latter situation are leaky throttle shaft seals, leak between carb and intake manifold at the attach flange and/or leaky intake manifold.

Dans idea works well but before you do that I would first do what is cheaper and you need to do it any way. Check your spark and make sure its a brite blue spark then move on to the carb if you have a good spark. Weak spark some times looks like a crab problem.

Choke enriches the mix.

Makes it fire with weak spark, or helps pull fule thru clogs in the fuel delivery system or help correct a lean mix situation due to a vacume leak ( gaskets, etc.. )

It could be quite a few things - but here is a quick and easy (and cheap) test to see if it fixes it. Remove that TSX 428 carb off the tractor and open it up (taking care not to rip any gaskets). Get some canned carb cleaner (with the little straw) and shoot some carb spray down each of the jets and air tunnels OPPOSITE the normal direction of flow - WATCH OUT FOR YOUR EYES! Do this with the entire can, pausing a few minutes between repeats to give the carb cleaner a chance to dissolve the gum and varnish buildup. Carefully put the carb back together and on the tractor. If you are industrious, you could also reem the holes with a piece of wire before the last cleaning.

May or may not fix the problem, but it is a good first shot that only takes a few minutes to do and the price of one can of carb cleaner. Might want to take this opportunity to ensure all three fuel filters are clean and not clogged up as well.

Good luck,
Dan
