I've seen restored 8Ns with black, red and, silver exhaust manifolds. Can someone tell me what color Ford painted the early 8N manifolds? Also, I don't remember the manifold getting all that hot (compared to say a car's). Is it necessary to use a high heat paint? Thanks.

I tried to research correct colors for various parts and struck out. The 8N manifolds were either red like the rest of the engine or flat black (depending on who you choose to believe). One very good restoration guide book I bought says MANIFOLD=RED but then has several pictures of "show room" restorations with plain cast iron (rusty looking) or flat black manifolds. I decided to use a high heat flat black stove paint on my 52 because the exhaust temp does get hot enough to eventually ruin regular paint on that part of the manifold.

It's your tractor so for things like lug nuts, various bolts, starter, and generator, there seems to be enough disagreement out there that you get to choose what looks best and very few people will bother you about details like that.

For some reason nobody seems to have been able to find any vintage COLOR photos of new 8N tractors from the 40s and 50s.

I have plenty of color photos of the 8ns.These are straight from FMC,not someones restoration.
The manifold was painted red along with most of the rest of the tractor. If anyone has a question on what color a part was painted, just ask, because I know, and have the original photos to prove it. don b

Thanks K. What you said is pretty much what I've run up against. Since the red will be hard to match in a high heat version, I think I'll go with a high heat silver to match the exhaust. It's hard to believe that its so difficult to find out how Ford originally suppied it but, on the other hand, if its such a difficult question, I don't imagine too many people will know the difference. I appreciate your input.
