Hey Tewell..... ....just 'cuz a starter solenoid "clicks" doesn't mean the solenoid internal contacts are good. Replace yer 3-terminal starter solenoid with another. Make certain yer little middle terminal is faceing the engine block or it will NEVER start. (don't ask)..... ...Dell

Don't worry, yer OEM 3-terminal 6-volt solenoid works just fine on 12-volts.

How about a little more info, please? What exactly was it doing (or not doing) and what exactly did you do to fix the problem? What happenend when you pressed the thumb switch? Did the starter turn over & not engage? Did you try jumping directly to the starter? You could easily have a bad battery cable ($10) or a bad connection ($0) instead of a bad starter ($90).

So you have a new starter, it turns over when you press the thumb switch, but does not engage the flywheel, correct? If that's the case, does the new starter have a new bendix or did you use the old bendix? And, did you move the flywheel manually to make sure it does not have worn teeth causing the bendix not to engage?

Big difference. Make sure the battery is fully charged & replace the cables. 6v or 12v? If it's 6v, you need to use a big, fat & short (sounds like me) 1/0 guage cable & the OEM strap on the positive post.

I read back through this Q&A and Bruce is on the right track. You have started to eliminate the things it cant be like corroded terminals. It is possible your new starter is also bad. Some of the replacement parts out there are not exactly same as the original quality.

Have you tried jump-starting it using a known good battery? MAKE 100% sure the tractor is in neutral. Connect negative jumper cable to any clean metal place on the tractor frame. MAKE 100% sure the tractor is in neutral. Then take the positive jumper cable and touch it to the bolt where the solid strap from the solenoid is attached to the starter. You should get a spark and a good starter will engage the flywheel and turn the engine over.

If not, the starter is defective. If it turns the engine over, the starter is good. Start working you way back from there to the battery.

Your problem sounds like it is either a bad starter, bad solenoid, a dirty connection at either end of either battery cable, bad battery cable, or a weak battery. Not necessarily in that order. Hope this helps.
