Pertronix update...

I posted a week or so back regarding the installation of my Pertronix (1244A) Ignitor on my 1953 Jubilee. Initially I couldn't get it to work. Turns out I was trying to keep the ballast resistor as part of the circuit. Since I have a complete 12V system (alternator, coil, wiring, etc.) I decided to ditch the resistor. The tractor started up very easily and purrs like a kitten. I no longer have to give the gas lever a little nudge when I turn the ignition key. It immediately starts right up. Previously it would always start up (but after one brief crank). Now, starting is instantaneous! There is a noticeable improvement in the ease of starting and the tractor feels like it is running better. And, this is a tractor that is kept in very nice working order so noticeing an improvement is even more impressive!

I have been using the Pertronix for several years in my 1967 Land Rover without any issues. So, I am not surprised by the subjective improvement in performance.

I know there are some purists that prefer to stay with the points/condensor...and that's just fine. But, for me, being able to install this unit and forget about any adjustments or worn/burnt contacts makes for one less potential issue to deal with on a yearly basis.

I am indeed a Pertronix fan!

Paul.

My instructions said that you had to supply the unit with 12V negative ground elctrical power so that rules out a ballast resistor.

I had the Pertronix wired up to the full 12V. The instructions do show how to wire it up with a ballast resistor. So, I kept the ballast resistor in line prior to the coil. This didn't work only because while handling my (rather old) ballast resistor I must have damaged it. I had 0 volts going to the coil! So, I just ditched it and all is well. But, you are right since I have converted every component to the proper 12V version my ballast resistor is not needed anyway.

Paul.

I'm with you Paul. I converted my 52 to pertronix and never looked back.

I kin not see were enny one kin argue that points are better than a electronic , electronic ign will out perform all day long enny day of the week. 12V system izz what they were designed for and were they werk the best. Determents are 6V system, and the cost to convert. You found the advantage, electronic ign. has its benefits on a cold start up. Ifs its better at start up then has to better at all conditions. I run a NAPA IC14SB coil on my side mt and it makes the world of difference. I have a Flame thrower coil that I have not took the time to install yet. When the time comes I am gonna hook up a scope and check out both coils. I am interested whether under normal conditions if the flam thrower izz worth the cost. I am sure the flame thrower will add extra zap for a misfire or a break down in the secondary. How much izz what I wan to know. I suspect what ya got with the new set up izz more zap out of the ign. Makes since a bigger match will make for a bigger fire especially when needed on a cold engine, thanks for the update
