It looks like I am going to be cleaning up dads old shop in the next few months. He shut it down after being open from 1949 to 1989. I don't think he ever threw anything away. When I was a teen he had me hang up all the old flathead ford cyl heads on the rafters with 60 penny nails. There were 28 of them, I know cause it was over 100 degrees and he made me climb back up there and count them. They are still there. So are all the other things, complete flathead v-8s, old engines of every description, a complete 52 studebaker champion (wrecked but with all the new body parts there somewhere) old carter AFB carbs, a straight 8 packard engine with aluniumn head, lots of stuff from the 40's and 50's. I am afraid the building is going to fall down and some kids will get in there and get hurt. Question:
the place is 400 miles away from me, how to best dispose of it, sell it lump sum on site or try to bring it all back here and sell it by the piece? I have been doing mechanic work all my life but there is stuff there that I have no idea what is.

I would be interested in hearing what you have for Studebakers. You mentioned the '52 Champ. I am in the Studebaker national and local clubs and that may be a good place to market that car.

What a treasure trove! If I was U, I'd obtain a large truck (or 2) and go there and salvage the whole thing! Bring it back to ur place and sort thru it, evaluate the stuffs, and spend the time to ebay most of it off! U would be surprised at the prices some folks will pay on ebay 4 stuffs that might otherwise go into the dumpster! Of course, if there are any emotional issues about this, it might not be a good idea. But, I'd suggest a personal trip there to ascertain the extent of the stuffs, it'd be worth ur while! H*ll, post a list of the goodies here and maybe one of us would buy some of the stuffs! (Cut Meg & Pierre outta da loop, hehehe) Nyway..Good Luck!! CC

A well advertized auction is the way to go. I attended one today here in SW MO and people go crazy over old stuff. I noticed many of the buyers looked like retired folks who would probably never use most of it, but had to have it.

"dispose of it?" {gasp, choke, and sob} what a treasure chest!! find a local hot rod club, and tell them what day to be there, they'll clean it up for you or load it in a truck and take it to a swap meet you'll be suprised what that kind of stuff will sell for if i were closer, id grab my kenworth and do that job for free [ if its in the building, its mine]type thing

I need one 8BA head for the right side plus all the bolts( or studs ) & water neck . If you have old tools for doing the valves I am interested in a couple certain ones .I already have some of what I need from my Dads stuff , but am missing a couple . Write me at callj.j.s@verizon.net or call 814 4328034 . I know it was rough cleaning out my parents things . I had 2 brothers so we split the tools . Hope to hear from you . God Bless , Ken

Ken I plan on going down there within the next few weeks. I don't think there any tools left there as he moved them all up to his farm and they sorta disappeared. I do know there is still a Ford tuneup machine there he always called a distributor tune up machine. It is pre WW2. I think the actual name is a Ford stroboscope. You may know more about it than I do. I think he used it to set distributor /advances on old fords. He also had a flathead sleeve remover/installer set which he bought in the 40's from Ford. It is still there. There are several flathead enginges there, mostly complete. The 265 chevy engine I removed from a 55 chevy (cracked piston) in 1968 is still there where I left it in 68, along with a 348 and a 409 I pulled out before I left home. It is sort of strange there, almost as if he suddenly one day, said "I quit" and never mechaniced in his shop again. I will keep in touch with you folks on this, my sisters and I just want it cleaned up. It is a fairly big shop building. We used to run as many as 25 vehicles thru it on a Saturday back in the late 50's and early 60's. I wish I had my other computer up and running, it has some pictures of some really neat old stuff, sidedraft carbs big as a gallon jug, a large collection of hood ornaments, some really long ones, packard I think. I will bring home his Sioux valve grinding equipment, I learned how to do valves/seats on that when I had to stand on a milkbox to reach the thing.

Ron:

Sounds like you may have a minor treasure trove on your hands. Don't let it "just disappear." In particular the 348/409 stuff is very valuable. It will sell very well on ebay.

I don't envy you having to do what you are going to have to do with you daddy's stuff. I know from experiance that he was very attached to his stuff just like I am.

My wife tells everybody that when I die she is going to have sale flyers ready to distribute at the wake and funeral! :O)

I think that if you could contract with a really

good tate auctioneer that might be a way to do it. Don't go yourself though. It would be too painful. Just get it done.

Good luck.

Zane

Now my 2 cents another way if someone has the time and you"ll be supprised how much it"ll go for, due to the great coverage is EBAY. But then we"ll have to call you sir cause all the money you"ll get.A friend of mine does it.
