I've just begun trouble shooting an electircal problem and thought someone might already have the answer.... I'm working on my '51 8N with a 6-volt system.

Yesterday, I went to start my 'tractor and the battery was flat. Jumped it and it started right up, but the ammeter went right to 30 amps.

A few minutes later, the tractor just died. Found it to be an electrical problem. Jumped it again, but it died only seconds after removing the jumper cable. Repeated this several times to confirm it was electrical and not a stuck float or anything else. In the process, I noticed the ammeter now read zero when the tractor was running.

I had the generator rebuilt last year, so I suspect it's OK. I charged the battery overnight, then checked the specific gravity today. 2 cells are a bit low, but weren't so bad that I'm conviced it's the battery. By the way, fluid level in the battery is fine.

The battery is 5 years old and has had a hard life. It ran the tractor with a bad generator for about 2 years (of light use). So, the battery supplied all of the juice to start and run the tractor.

Any thoughts? Thanks,

Russ

When I got my 51 8n side mount it had a 12V battery in it. The only modification outher than the battery is that one wire was diconected from the ampmeter. It dose not charge.
It allways starts and runs great. It will run for days on a charge. In fact I've never needed to charge it I just charge it because the charger is out for somthing else. I will fix it right someday but it just works so good on just the 12V battery It's not on my current list. I bet this setup without a resistor on the coil would damage a front mount distributer coil. I am not recomending this it's FYI.

When you have a dead battery.. and jump it.. the battery is still dead. That '30' you saw was probably the genny trying to charge a stone dead battery, AND run the ignition... My guess is something gave up the ghost in the vr.. or the genny.

The better thing would have been to charge the battery at least some.. then jump.

Now that she is charged.. repolarize, take a volt reading..and get her started. Now.. take another volt reading? nothing? Try full fielding the genny? nothing? leave it full fielded and jump bat/arm? charge? If so. bad reg... ( cutout is open )

Now that you have the battery recharged check the voltage on the battery in the tractor before starting. It should read 6+ volts. Start the tractor. Check the voltage again with the tractor running. It should be higher, close to 7 volts. If the voltage is not higher with the tractor running the chances are you have a problem with your generator VR system.
