I"m prettty close to deciding to install a PTO conversion kit on my "50 8N, at the same time I change the tran/hydro oil. I"ve read through the archives, etc., here and elsewhere, and some say that i should flush out with kerosene after I drain it to try & clean some of the crud out, removing the inspection/access plate where the dip stick is to get at the insides. Is this a good idea? Do I need to by a new gasket for the inspection plate and replace it when I reinstall it? Also, thanks to all the posters on this site - I never would have known that I need an override clutch to be safe if it wasn"t for reading what is posted here.

A new gasket wouldn't hurt for the inspection cover.. as you are ordering a pto kit 9 and pto gasket ).. that extra gasket won't add but about 50 cents to the order.. however.. if you don't have one.. that is one of the one places where a gasket 'goo' ia acceptable. That is.. permatex, copper kote, or plain rtv silicone will do ok in that area.. it's not a pressurized sump or a critical spot. While I'm not a fan of liquid gaskets.. that place is 'ok'..

The kero or diesel flush is a good idea.. strain it thru a paint filter.. then let it settle and then reuse for another cleaning.. etc..

Thanks for the advice. straining and reusing the kero is another good idea I never would have thought of. I bought the N in late June, but I keep it in the garage of our weekend house about 105 mi. from where we live (got to make a living in the city yet for awhile). So everything takes longer to get done. I want to do some rough mowing out at the ranch this fall, when it gets a little cooler in TX, with the brush hog I bought along with the tractor. Next trip I'll drain and replace the coolant, then probably do the tranny & hydro the trip after that. Did the engine oil earlier, but still need to clean out the airfilter oil cup and refill. little by little... Thanks again.
