51 8n side 6 volt side mount distibutor

The rear tire has about a half inch of play.

On concrete, when you shake the tire, you can hear it slidign back and forth. No bolts move. The brake drum inner part moves slightly with respect to the outer brake drum cover.

Checked my 49 for play and there isnt any.

I see in the FO-4 manual shims are used to adjust end play of the wheel.

I dont see any hydraulic fluid leaking either.

I see that the tire's ;ugs and bolts are not all the same and for sure has been removed before.

What might be the problem do you think?

Is it worth jacking up and removing?

Hub is worn out. The nut will tighten against the shaft, but the hub has slop in it and slides up the axle; away from the nut. So the nut may be tight,(it was on mine): but the hub was worn out.
No big deal to change. Be careful. Those wheels are HEAVY

Make sure the big nut is tight(600 ft lbs). If so the hub is probably worn.

Does the big 2" nut on the center of the hub feel tight? You'll need a BIG wrench to put the recommended 450ft-lbs torque on it.

Jeff--my 2" nut on one wheel was actually a 2-piece nut that loosens up. I picked up the correct 2" nut with wire clip and a BIG 2" closed end wrench---when I tighten this nut up, should any side to side tire play be eliminated if everything else is ok?---Thanks, Tim

Hey Tim...the big nut will tighten the hub to the axle shaft, but you could still have movement. If the bearing is worn or if you have to many shims the wheel would still feel loose.

One way to check if you've got the right number of shims in there is to jack both rear wheels off the ground & turn the hub you're working on. If the other wheel turns in the opposite direction AND there's no endplay in the axle shaft, you got it shimmed right.

The hub could be badly worn from being loose for a long time. You may find the hub has been rubbing the brake return springs.Sure sign of a loose hub.New hub 50.00 fix before the axle spline is worn out.

I would guess (emphasis on guess!) that it's a bearing going out or in need of re-packing.

Good luck on solving it.
