My 2N feels and smells like it is running rich. I have read through the archives and adjusted the main adjustment needle out 1 1/2 turns. The Idle mixture adjustment does not change the running of the engine at any position. If you go from idle to full throttle a 4 foot round of black smoke bellows out the exhaust pipe. The exhaust then clears up to visually appear normal. The spark plugs as you would expect are black indicating a very rich mixture. It has been a couple of years since the last carb overhaul. Any ideas where to start would be appreciated.

As Ken says. That 1-1/2 turns is a starting point on the carb adjustment. All engine run a little differant so depending on where you live, I.E. The carb adjustment will be differant if you live in Denver then it will be for some one that lives on the east coast. What you need to do is start the tractor and then turn that adjustment in till you here the engine slow do/fall off a little then turn it out just enough to get it running smooth again. Then drive it a little and readjust as needed for the most power and no black smoke. It may take a few tries to get it just where it needs to be

2N, Forget about the 1 1/2 turns and set the main mix to where your not running rich. Mine ends up at about 3/4 a turn, yours will likely end up somewhere else.(more OR less) and yes, the idle mix doesn"t make much of an audible change in the engine.
