8N rear wheel seals

Working on left rear wheel seal of 8N. Old outer seal retainer was found cinched down, heavily warped under bolt heads and backfilled with orange sealant, which didn't seal. New outer seal retainer won't snug up to the backing plate. There is a full 1/16th" gap caused by the inner seal protruding too far out and butting up to the inside face of the outer seal. (This is not about the cork seal. The cork seal seems to close the gap between the thickness of the backing plate and the slightly inset face of the shaft housing.) Either I am missing a metal plate that goes between the outer seal retainer and the backing plate or there is something wrong about the present inner seal. It's too thick or not installed deep enough into the housing? What is happening here?

Lastly, what is the strip of thick felt 8N2217 used for? I don't see an old one here.

Thanks, ART

Thanks ptfarmer and murnga, you were right. That seal wasn't supposed to be there.

I have a newer model 8N (serial # on side of block by oil filter is above # 8N 48653). This has an inner seal on the far side of the axle bearing and an outer seal is housed in a retainer plate. The 3rd (odd)seal was stuffed in a recess in the front side of the axle bearing housing that looks like it might have held the seal for earlier 8Ns. Anyway, I'm on the right track now. I got rained out tonight but will get it finished tomorrow.

Thanks all, Arthur

Art, I think someone has riged an inner seal in your tractor. The only inner seal is in the axle housing behind the brg on about 1950 up models. The only seal behind the outer seal is a cork band about an inch wide that squeezes between the hub and inner brg race. The felt goes around the groove in the backing plate to keep dust out of the drum.
