I recently got my 8N back from the shop. I had already replaced the solenoid and starter, they replaced the bendix, distributor cap (cracked), and did a tune-up. It still doesn't start right (sometimes there is no response at all, no clicking or anything, sometimes it fires right up,) it's running rougher than ever, and it's overheating. I'm going to put in a new radiator and thermostat. Questions -- 1. can you replace the distributor cap (front mount) without taking off some of the front end? 2. the battery is probably shot (like you guys told me) and seems to only charge up to about 5 volts, what voltage should be coming off the generator, and which terminals do I check? 3. or better yet, how do I determine if the generator is working? 4. I have the wiring diagram from smith8n/wiredia1.jpg, do any of you know of a similar diagram that includes suggested voltage/amperage readings at various points on the diagram? Thanks in advance. I rally enjoy reading your stuff!

Bang,

If you sometimes have zero response to pushing the starter switch, and sometimes is fine, try looking at the switch.

Mine is intermittent like that too. A quick test when it isn't working is to take a small piece of wire and touch the terminal on the switch and ground the other end anywhere on the chassis.

The answer to question 1 is Yes. Taking the cap off a front mount distributor is easy. Flip the bail on top of the coil and move the coil out of the way. take the sparkplug wires off the cap. Flip the 2 retaining clips and the cap will almost fall off. Your DONE!
