I have a 50 Model 8N 8N331164. I cant see any stars or diamonds. I was using it to do some blade work when I hit a hidden stump. It lost power and began smokin. I found it was running only on last 2 cyl. I ran compression check, #1 115 dry, 130 wet. #2 98 dry, 100 wet. #3 80 dry, 90 wet. #4 35 dry, 45 wet. The #1 plug was oil soaked and #2 was carboned real good. I pulled head and found a good bit of carbon around #3 and #4 valves. There is a good bit of play in all pistons and if I push them over to the side I can see almost 1/4 inch ring gap on top ring. So I am guessin that I need to ring and sleeve it. I aint much of a mechanic, but I am willing to give it a try. Any good suggestions on this matter? Thanks. Pops

I think you have three choices for a rebuild. First off, if you have the ability to check the compression & pull the head, chances are very good that w/ the help of folks on this board, you can do the job. First option: call the local tractor mechanic & have the work done. Parts $500, add machine shop work to turn the crank, hot tank the engine, etc, plus labor, you're looking at $1500, depending on what they find & where you live. Option 2: pull the engine, pull it down & take it to the machine shop for those things you can not do or do not want to do, like turning the crank, valves & installing the sleeves. Plan 3: do just about all of it yourself & learn a lot in the process. I've seen post after post on this board from guys getting advice on every aspect of a rebuild & getting it done successfully.
