8n tractor won't start

More help please. I wrote in last week about my tractor which unfortunately has been sitting a few months, it ran perfectly when stored, and now won't start.

In response to Dell and Old, and others i checked most of my connections starter and battery and all seem good, alittle corrosion which i cleaned. I have checked my points, which also seem good. Nonetheless i have an order in for new plugs wires points and condenser. But still nothing from the tractor, not even a sputter. We did try chaining it up to my dads truck and tried jumping it by pulling it down the drive way, i thought that with more speed it might have a greater tendency to run, still nothing at all, not even a cough.

I am a little lost. I was getting good blue spark, which i am going to change everything =but the coil anyhow. It seems to be taking fuel, at least to the carb, however not a single plug has even been moist? Which is something that amazes me. Short of a change in timing, which i don't know how that would happen on its own, i am lost. Any help would be greatly appreciatied.

The fields are way tall!

You say you are getting a good blue spark. If this is by taking sparkplugs out and grounding them and the spark is across the points of them, then I would not change anything electrical (points, condensor, wires or plugs). Why do something and create another problem?? Horse sense tells me it should at least give out a sputter or 2 if it is getting any fuel to at least one cylinder. You lead me to believe that you did nothing to it from the time you parked it until now except check spark. Follow the advice of those below by using starting fluid in the intake of the carb and see if you don't get her to sputter. Gasoline down the spark plug holes will also work, but is harder to do than just a shot of starting fluid.

Well you have a good blue spark but do you have the plug wires on in the right places and the fireing order correct?? If you don't have the fireing order right it will not run. Now if the fire order is correct then you might pull the air cleaner tube off and with the tractor out of gear. Put your hand over the carb and try cranking the engine. Does it suck on your hand and does your hand get gas on it?? If you answer no to either or both of them you have either a maniflod leak or a problem with the fuel system. You can also try to prime the system by putting a little gas in each cylinder nd try to start it. I had to do that to a 9N not long ago to get it running and since then it has started easy. An engine that has sat for a month or more can loose compression nd then it will not start as it should.

How long is a few months?? 2-3 months may be no problem,6 months or longer could be flat gas & or gummed up carb.. Try the starting fluid & see what happens..Good luck Wayne

if you are getting gas and spark, you need to check compression, you could have a stuck valve or lifter, could be as easy as taking the valve covers off the side of the engine and seeing if all the valves are moving, if they are not it could be as easy as squirting some penetrating oil on them and a little pry with a screw driver may "pop" them . or as hard as taking the head off and loosening it that way, also trans fluid, diesel fuel, marvel mystery oil, etc, down the sparky holes sometimes loosen them too, if its spinning fast with out sounds of starting or resisting I would bet you have a stuck open valve or lifter, pat

If you have blue spark, then pull your air cleaner hose and get a can of start fluid.

Charge up your 6v battery.

Get a 12v battery and jumper cables.

Jumper 6v battery, hot to coil.. thus bypassing any bad wireing.

Have someone help you... Make sure tractor is in neutral.. check it 4-5 times.

Connect jumper cables to donor 12v battery. Connect one cable to the starter lug.. When you connect the other cable to a close ground.. like a bare spot on a radious rod, etc.. the starter will take off at super speed.

When this happens, have your helper give it a sniff of ether, perhaps a 2nd if it seems to help. Have your fuel turned on, and throttle adjusted to 2/3 level in case it does take off and run.

If it will start on the ehter but dies.. you need to check the fuel flow.

Post your results back.

If this doesn't work.. a compression test will be needed.. even if it is only a 'thumb over hole test'

Have you tried priming the cylinders with a small amount of gas? Or a bit of starting fluid sprayed into the intake of the carb? Should at least get you a bang or two if you have spark.

Is this a side mount distributor or a front mount?

Are you saying you changed the plugs, wires, points and condenser?

Have you checked for good fuel flow from the carb? (unscrew the bottom drain bolt)

Have you checked the points for proper gap and spark from the plugs?

Write back and tell us where you are at exactly. I know how you feel when the grass gets tall!
