OK, I can't find it in the books so here goes. There's an adapter plate that allows the water pump to mount to the '48 8N engine. This plate has a "tab" off one side with a nut welded to the end. The nut is obviously there so another component can be mounted. Problem is I can't figure out what would attach to this. The 8N is going back together after a few years of disassembly and I forgot.

These guys are right,it is only used on side mount 8-N. The rest of us just cut it off so they look orginal.

Once upon a time long long ago I was a parts men in a Ford tractor dealership.

The front mounted distributor engines @ 9N/2Ns came without the generator adjusting bracket. When the 51 8N came out with the generator on the left side The generator adjusting bracket was added to the same water pump by modifying the adapter plate that goes between the pump housing and the engine block. All replacement pumps have that adjusting tab. The original type without it was discontinued so if you got a new pump for a 39 model it had the adujusting tab/nut on it.

Old is correct. This pump also fits the side mount dist models. On these models, the gen was moved to the left side and the adj bracket bolted to this nut.

Balancer, I have the same water pump backing plate (8N8508) on both my 1940-9N and 1948-8N and I have nothing attached to that nut that is welded on to the backing plate. Un-sure what it could be used for. Mark :)

Hi Tim,
I think you're right. The only difference is that when I got my 8N this plate was flipped 180 deg. so that the tab was on the other side of the pump. It doesn't look like I need it. At one point I was thinking it might be where the coil bracket mounts on the later 8Ns with the side mount distributor.

One more question - how'd you insert your photo into your reply. I tried to respond with a picture but could figure out how to insert it. One of those days I guess.

First of all, the only dumb question is the one you should have asked but didn't and went ahead anyway, and screwed something up.....lol

About how to insert a picture into the text. There is a way to put your photo into the photo gallery on this site but I don't know how to do it that way. I will tell you the way I do it. First you have to have the picture uploaded to your personal web page or to a place like photobucket. It won't post if it's just there on your computer. Try not to make it too big as a favor to those on the forum that are using a dialup connection. Basically you do it this way:

[[img src="http://somewebaddress.com/mypicture.jpg]]

(replace the [[ with a <, and the other ]] with a >)

Hope that helps.
Carl

Is there any way you can take a picture and post it? I am trying to figure out what you mean but having a little trouble. (Granted, the only water pump I've removed is off a '52 8N, but I think it's real similar if not the same.) I remember there is a piece that sticks off to one side that bolts to something else, and I have photos or notes of it. But I'm not sure that's the part you're thinking about.

Well I'll be damned. Thanks Hobo. I can't believe the response this question got or the time people like yourself took to answer it. Sometimes I stand there scratching my head and wishing I had someone to talk to about this project. That's when its nice to have this forum. You guys are all right. Regards - Balancer

I brought that tractor 2 years ago it ran good but had oil in the rad. So what the heck let install a head gasket. Got the head off and the valve guides are worn slap out so gonna rebuild the engine, have not go around to it but iffin I would throw away this dad’burn putter and had the time I have played here I could’a done a complete restoration on it. One day this one owner all original non farmerized 52 will again walk.
