O.K. guys, you always been a great help before. I replaced the points/condenser/distributor gaskets, and cleaned all the connections on my 2N.....still wouldn"t run (no sparks). I found a break in the "wire" that runs through that ceramic "thing" under the hood. I took it apart and pinched the wire to the connector and it fired right up.....what is the name of that rectangular ceramic thing with the wire inside coiled around a piece of "something else"? Not the slightly rectangular shaped one up against the dash, but the one where the wires are yellow on one end and black on the other.

I want to order one or find it on e-bay so I can replace it before the tractor quits running again.

Thanks in advance,

Joe

Thanks, I thought that's what it was. I have another, similar "thing" mounted up closer to the dash. When I bought the tractor a couple years back, this one was in bad shape, and cracked. I glued it and forgot about it until just recently when I was hunting down the problem.

I'll order one today. Thanks again to all, absolutely great site! Joe

The only possible thing it could be is the "infamous" ballast resistor. You can obtain one from the parts dept. right here on this site. Just click the link below and scroll down the page. I believe you want Part No: 8NE10306, price $6.06. As Dell says "cheap" !
It's always good to support this site so they can keep these great tractor forums going. Just click the link below and it'll take you to the page you need.

Sounds like you are describing the ballast resistor. Its purpose is to allow full battery power to the coil when cold (like start up in the morning), then gradually reduce current as the coiled resistor heated up. This helped the coil last longer.

However, if the wire came off, you would have no power at all to the coil.

HTH,
Dan

Sounds like you've described your resister. I reduces the voltage to the front mount coil, so it'll last longer.
