I have a 1950's ford 8n with a front mount dist. and a 12v conversion i was wondering how my firing order could be (1234) starting from the front of the tractor. when i switch the 3 and 4 plugs (1243) it barely runs and has no power. i can even pull both plugs 3 and 4 off why it is running and engine does not change. the second i switch them back around (1234) it runs like a champ. thanks for your help

Maybe you don't realize that the numbers embosed
on the distibutor CAP are "PLUG" numbers. The spiggot marked 4 on the cap is really distributer #3, CCW rotation and connects to plug # 4

Maybe Johnnie Cash worked on your tractor when it was being made?????

The firing order is definately 1243. No way is it 1234. Making firing orders in that sequence would be just too simple!

Maybe the number 4 cyl. should be considered the "master cyl. Find that cyl. first for the wiring schematic. put the wire to #4 first. That wire should be confirmed thru the couduit to the distributor cap.

The rest should be simply, 123.

At least this is the way I do it. Of courst I try to keep everything as simple as 123.

The 4 has got to go between the 2 and the 3.

1243. No other way it will work.

Well..... .
The Number 4 cyl. is located further from the distributor cap. Therefore, the wire length is the longest of all the rest. So, in my theory, if a person locates #4 cyl and sends the wire thru the conduit, first, that would make the #4 cyl. the master. Because, if you start wiring with the #1, first, you might run out of wire.

So, master cyl, will take the longest run of spark plug wire. After all even with the timing spark of 1243, you might run out of spark plug wire when trying to wire up #3 cyl.

As far as the distributor cap, make sure to label where the #4 cyl goes.

On the Pratt & Whitney engines, #5 cyl was the master cyl, due to the collector ring and engine timing for the two magnetoes.

Don't think they can. Got to have them crossed somewhere. I had trouble like this before. Mine were inside the wire conduit down the top of the engine. It was hard to tell which wire was which.

The firing order is 1243, front to back. Are you sure the wires are right on the cap too?
