I need to replace the grease zerk on the arm that the leveling box resides. I have an 8N. Does anyone know the correct size for this zerk? Are all the grease zerks for the 8N the same size? I know you can buy them by the bunch and are relatively inexpensive-- Thanks---Tim (WI)

Just a little note on the grease zerks. The original zerks on the 8ns DID NOT HAVE THE SPRING LOADED BALL IN THEM,just straight thru zerks. don b

8nR-
Russ is correct. There are two types of pipe threads-straight and NPT (tapered). The tapered is designated by the ID (inside diameter) of the pipe fitting, not the thread size. For example a 1/8 NPT has a tapered thread of 27 per inch. The straight pipe thread is 28. 1/4-20 is a NC thead standard thread- different animal. The slope of taper is 3/4" per foot. Take off old fitting and take to your local tractor yard \/dealer and he can match it up. HTH.

At the risk of causing information overload, Tim, I'll mention that the Master Parts Catalog calls for "fitting, lubricator 1/4"-28."

not to guess WHY your zerk(s) need replacing, but I'll comment anyway that when I got my 8N, really all the zerks seemed "no good", would NOT take grease. I found though that if I stuck them with the point of my jacknife, it freed them up, and now all my zerks work just fine. Just a thought.

Charlie---just the one by the leveling arm needed to be replaced. Somehow the end got broken off and I finally was able to get it loose. All the others seem to be in good working order----Tim (WI)

I just measured them, and one size has 1/2" diameter threads, and the other ones have 3/8" diameter threads. I do not have the actual packages like I thought, just in bags.

HTH,

All I know izz I have my fit'ins baged and marked, small'izz size izz marked 1/4 X 28 STR. next big'er size izz marked 1/8 NPT
I git'em at a mill supply house that has all size'izz by the thou'zin and mark the bags before I reach in the bin and git me a hand full. Tecknical'ly I kin only read the bag and not a Zerk-X-Perk. Even if I were I prob'bly would fergit Zerk 101 and revert back to read'ing the bag.

I replaced all of them on my tractor - and they are not all the same size. The zerts on the tie rod ends are smaller than say the front spindle housing. Also, there are angled zerts like the clutch linkage. If memory serves me, there are only two common sizes. I got a pack of the small, a pack of the bigger, and a pack of the mixed with angles. I replaced every one with these packs. Oh, and get the SAE, not the Metric versions.

Dan--searching the archives, I only found 1 size mentioned that was a 1/4"-20 and it wasn't location specific. What is your best guess for this 1/4"-20? Small, medium or large? I am getting supplies put together today for visiting my 8N this weekend. I will get a bag of each--thanks. Tim

I wan't to say the two sizes were 1/4" and 3/8" - but don't hold me to it. I can check when I get home, as I have the packages in my garage.

I think the ones you are calling"smaller" are 1/4 inch x 28 thread..The ones you call "larger are 1/8th inch Npt. Wayne

I was working on several pieces of equipment that needed zerk fittings, and was shocked to see what they sell for at TS, NAPA, etc. Four fittings cost anywhere from $2 to $4.25. Bought 'em anyway in disgust. Was in the Chinese Tool store (Harbor Freight)the next week to look around and bought a large assortment of zerks of various sizes/thread-pitch etc, and the price was $4 for about 50 of them. DOH!
