Short:Seized exaust guide,(split). Won't budge w/drift. PB blaster tap tap tap.. try try try.
Tomorrow I am going to cut the valve off and tap the guide and pull it with a high grade bolt and
heavy plate on top of the head.
Anybody ever had to do this? Anybody think it will work ok. It's the best I can think of.
PS: I will tape oil ports and use vacuum running under the guide to catch shavings.Tape top.

The keeper is out. 1 side was broken at the bottom and now the other is. I got it down far enought! The only thingleft is to get it OUT.

If you got it down far enough to get the keeper out let the blaster soak on it then try gently to push it out with the cam. One of mine was stuck that way and I put a socket between the tappet and the guide and rotated the cam (crank)to push it up. Had to graduate to longer sockets but it worked.

If there is a fibre gear on the camshaft it may fail trying this trick on the guide.

If you got it to move enough to get the keeper off you should be able to knock it out the top with the drift if you hit it hard enough in the right place. I have done hundreds and have never had to tap and pull one out.

If somebody has mistakenly made the mistake of adding a seal to the outside of the exhaust valve guide this may be what is making it so hard to come out. Do not add seals to the exhaust guides. Big mistake!!!!! Only the intake valves need this seal. It is only there on the intake to prevent the vaccumm on the intake stroke from pulling in oil. The exhaust stroke will push the oil back on the exhaust valve enough to prevent the vaccumm pulling oil past the exhaust guide. That's the reason they aren't in the overhaul kits or the gasket kits.

Did the N engines originally come with a fiber cam gear? It's been 45 years since I last took one apart. Mine had the aluminum gear. The old Chevy 216 had fiber gears and were good for only about 20,000 miles. But easy to change I had to do it once on the side of the road with a load of cinder blocks on a 1 1/2 Chevy. I would think that if he has the fiber gear he would want to change it.
