Has to be switched to - ground and if you don't the moment you hook up the battery you will fry the new alterntor. Guess how I know how fast one will fry, yep hooked one up + ground and the alterntor smoked before I could even think about pulling the cables off.

Battery goes negative ground - reason - you can't polarize an alternator and get it to change polarity like you can a generator. Although a few positive ground alternators were made, they are not the type you are going to buy to put on your "N"

Jack,

I don't know where you've been, but don't rule out the possibility of a (+) ground alternator, such as a Delco 10SI.

Rebuilts are readily available with aftermarket regulators and rectifiers in 6-Volt (+) or (-) ground, and 12-Volt (+) or (-) ground.

I occasionally do see a 6-Volt (+) ground alternator installed on an older tractor, or a classic vehicle.

Therefore, never say "NEVER", until confirming what setup someone has come up with!

The 12V alternator will require negative ground.
