I am posting this for my dad who owns a 9n, not sure of the year. He says the tractor will run for about 1/2 hour then die. If it sits a while, it will start again. Also, the hitch doesn't move up or down, it did work some time ago.

Thank you for any information,

Joel B.

Could be a bad coil. Try replacing it.

There is a lot of info in the archives on the runs for 1/2 dilemma.

It is probably the coil or ignition failing once they get warm. Next time it happens, place a jumper around the ignition and see if it will run. If it does, then it is the ignition. If not, pull a plug and see if you get a spark. Then probably the coil.

As far as the 3 pt hitch, you do have the PTO engaged, right? (the hyd pump is driven by PTO shaft).

If the tractor starts and runs well for half an hour then flat shuts down you are likely looking at an electrical problem that is heat related. If it sputters to a stop you are likely looing at a partial obstruction in the fuel supply. You can narrow it down by looking for fire at the plugs when it shuts down and checking the float bowl drain to see if the bowl is full when it shuts down.

If it looks electrical then suspects, in no particular order, are ignition switch, coil, condensor, or possibly points. If fuel seems to be the trouble there are three screens in the system and any or all could be crudded up.

Would need more info to give you a guess on the hydralic troubles.

Take every opportunity to work on the tractor with your dad. Some day you will regret every missed opportunity.

Your mileage may vary
