Hi Everyone: Wow what a great board. You guys have helped this mechanically challenged wannabe overhaul a governor, diagnose and rebuild a problem distributor on my 9n. Yesterday afternoon after I got out of my hot work place (public school teacher), I was out on my old 9n discing away on my 17 acres along the blacktop highway. Planting season is in full gear right now and their were all these 100,000 outfits traveling down the highway to their next section of land to work up. Cab, air conditioning, stereo system and all that. I am sitting out there in the hot dust totally in a state of euphoria enjoying my 9n's deep throaty tones, when it starts to rain, huge drops and then it hails. Did I stop - Nope , having too much fun. The bigger rigs kind of lose the ability to be close to soil. I wouldn't trade places with them for anything. Now my question, my 9n engine is getting to the point where the oil pressure drops from 30 down to less than 5 lbs at full throttle. This happens after about 30 minutes running. I realize it is indicating that a major engine rebuild may be needed. What I did was change the oil and put in straight 40 weight, and I notice now that the oil pressure drops down to 9 to 10 lbs and stays there. Is that an ok pressure for now. I don't want to rip into a perfectly running machine unless I have to. What are your thoughts guys?

My 8N had a similar problem. I used 50 wt. oil and the oil pressure was about 5 PSI after it got hot. I lived in FL and now TX and it worked OK with the 50 wt. I ran the tractor for over 20 years like that. I tore the engine down last year and the rod bearings were so loose that I could wiggle them on the crank. I think this is where I lost the oil pressure. You will need a rebuild some day to fix the problem.

I have always run under the rule of thumb that you should have a minimum of 10 lbs oil pressure for each 1000 RPMs when hot. If you are flat out at 2000+ RPMs, I personally would not feel comfortable with less than 10 lbs of pressure, but that is just me.

Rich,

A search on the archives for "oil pressure" will give you a ton of information on that exact concern.

If I recall, low oil pressure isn't that much of a concern.

Rich, you are OK with that oil pressure.
The 40 wt is heavier and will lubricate the bearings ok.
You might want to look into another gauge to see if yours is not correct.
If it is not burning oil and the compression is still good, you may only need to rebuild the oil pump.
