I have a gopher infestation! Been here 38 years on 5 acres. Not so bad then, but really bad now. I don"t mind them so much on the other 4 1/2 acres but the 1/2 acre around the house and vegetable gardens bugs me. I've trapped 'em; plowed "em out; used repellents; etc., etc. I'd like to try poison, but have a dog and neighbors have cats, so afraid to use. Anyone that's used it know if gophers come out of their burrows before they die? Thanks in advance.

You could try plastic explosives shoved in their holes. Worked for Bill Murray in the movie Caddyshack. ..... No, wait a minute. The gopher got away. Guess that doesn't work. Nevermind.

Since this is a tractor forum... how about killing them with the exhaust from your tractor? (This is apparently illegal in California and maybe other states, but not all).

Light a railroad flare or highway flare or two and throw it in the hole, seal of the entrance so it is as close to airtight as can be. The flare burns and uses up the air killing rodents.

I have a neighbor that connects a "hose" to a propane tank, sticks one end of the hose into the gopher hole, and turns on the propane valve for about 5 minutes. I saw another guy take an old riding lawnmower (wore out, no mower deck, barely runs), connected a hose to the muffler, stuck one end of the hose in the gopher hole, start engine and let it pump carbon monoixde into the gopher tunnel for about 5-10 minutes. It works. Not too good for the old mower engine, but who cares? Its wore out anyway.

In NH the 22-250 works well. Here in NJ I use a .22 .

I wouldn't endore pouring used motor oil (classified as a hazardous waste material byt he US govt. ) on the ground and point surce poluting our earth... however i know of 3 ways to get rid of them.

Dump moth balls down the hole.. then fill in.

This works similar to the chlorine gas trick.. but is easier.. and safer ( to the person ).

Dump cat litter box 'leavings' down the hole.. cover and wait. I've not seen ahole dug back out after treating with cat litter 'leavings'.

Lastly.. i've seen people dig a hole at a burrow entrance and burry a 5g bucket fully, perhaps even a big deeper.. like anbother 6" or 1'.. Then you have trapped the suckers for removal and relocation.. etc.. or whatever..

Hehe. I think those methods are brilliant! I particularly like the "leavings" idea. That"s "letting no resource go to waste!" I might have to use this in an attempt to get the pest out of my potatoes.

Have you ever noticed how soft and fine the fur on a pocket gopher is? I"ve often wondered what a pair of pocket gopher mittens would be like in December. ;-)

You dig the hole into the burrow entrance.. thus anything coming out of the burrow falls int he bucket. You make the hole so that it takes up the entire front of the burrow.. thus no way to 'go around' the bucket.

You just have to check the trap every day.. that way you don't leave the critters in there forever.. Either dump somewhere else.. or dispatch quickly..

We are on a 40 acre farm with a barn full of horses and working cats. After coverting an idle field to a hayfield, we disturbed the gophers and they moved under the barn, digging under the concrete floor and even coming up in stalls. We had at least 6 different holes dug and more appearing regularly. If I filled one in it was redug overnight. Poison, fire, and explosives were suggested to solve the problem, but of course were not acceptable. However, I *have* found the solution and it really works!

I filled in the holes at the edge of the concrete floor and then dribbled used motor oil (all those containers saved from changing oil in the tractors) along the edge of the side where they were digging. They did not come back anywhere in the barn for a year. When the following year a single hole appeared, I covered it over with the tailings and dribbled some more oil in that spot. Gone again! Since starting this I have read that gophers clean themselves and greatly dislike stuff like oil. I think I should patent this!

Here is a good way to eliminate burrowing pests. Not 4 d faint of heart, or Animal Rights activists! Simply take a 2-liter Coke Bottle (or other plastic soda-pop bottle, brand don't matter) cut off the bottom 2" to form a cup. Ya gotta do some modification of the hole, dig a shelf and smooth out the dirt so a piece if plywood (or cardboard) can be fitted in an airtight manner. Now, ya simply take the cup, place it on the "shelf" and pour a little ammonia in the cup. Now, it gets tricky.... Acting fast, u add a bunch of Swimming-Pool Chlorine (DON'T BREATH THE FUMES!!!) and slam the cover down, and shovel more dirt on top of it to seal the hole! This floods the burrow with CHLORINE GAS, guarenteeing no survivors! The animals croak in the burrow, so u don't hafta deal with them. (Gas was used by the Krauts during the WAR) Like I said..don't let them commie Animal Rights Activists in on this little thing, or they will raise he*** and probably make it impossible to obtain ammonia or swimming-pool chlorine! But it works, with no expenses, assuming u have swimmin-pool chlorine & ammonia laying about ur place!! I use it regularly on Ground-Hogs, which are a Major Pest in my area!!

Would chlorine Bleach work just as well, combined with the amonia? Standard household warning not to mix the two. I would think it would have the same effect as swimming pool chlorine. And most people would be more likely to have bleach around the house.

It is a matter of % chlorine! Household bleach generally tops out at 5%. I guess u could use that, but I had the sp stuff laying about. Works GREAT!! Just don't breath the fumes!! The idea is To KILL da ground-hogs, NOT people!!

Check out this website; www. rodenator.com.Then click on Rodenator Pro.
Guys sells them down the road in Idaho.
I've seen it work but they cost around $1500 but if you have plenty of neighbors with the same problem it would pay to have one.

My father in law used a 12 ga and kept 26 acres virtually rodent free. I would have to get a different wife to try that, and I don't have the time anyway. So our 3.6 acres is overrun with the varmits! Traps used to work pretty well, but they've learned...

I tried pellets and smoke bombs, but didn't do any good. One thing I've heard of, but haven't yet tried is to drill out the center of carrots and place the pellets in the carrots. Then the carrots go into the tunnel. Sounds like a lot of work, but could be effective.

Maybe I'll start a business, selling poisoned carrots:-)

If you had my Jack Russell/Rat Terrier there you would have a very happy dog and a lot less rats in a short time.

My place used to be covered up with chipmonks until we got Bluff our jack Russell who looks like a small Rat Terrier. We no longer have chipmonks. Just holes everywhere!

OK, so he can dig. But is he as dumb as the rat terrier/Jack Russell we've got? Worst dog I've ever had. He's so stupid, he'll trot out to the front yard, half-hike his leg, and pee all over his front foot while he looks around with this quizzical expression on his face like he's trying to figure out why his paw's getting wet. Dumb as a bag of hammers. When I call for him by name, he just looks at me. But if I call for "Short Bus Dog", he'll come runnin' like his tail's on fire. If the kids weren't so attached to him, I'd have put him out of his misery a long time ago. Never thought to see if he was any good at huntin' varmints. Always figured he was too stupid to chase 'em.

I have been using poison pellets on gophers for the past 3 years. I have not seen any surface before they die. I also have neighbors dogs and cats around and have not had a problem with them finding dead gophers. I do place the bait in the main tunnels of the gophers. Doing this requires some digging but it seems to be working!
