I live in southeast Louisana. I bought my 8n just before Katrina returning from the storm I foud out that we took on three feet of water. I have pretty much got my house, and shop back in order now. I am working on my 8n, I draind all the fluids when I came home and have got her running ok. The problem I am having now is the gear oil seems milky. Does the transmition gear oil run the 3-point hitch? The hitch will not stay up it wants to drop. What weight oil should I put in the gear box? Thank you for your advise.

After you drain out the fluid & after you have the inspection plates off, my bet is that you will find the pump base full of sludge. If you do not clean it out, it will continue to contaminate the new fluid. Reach in & scoop it out by hand. After you get most of it out, start flushing it w/ diesel fuel or kerosene. Put a bucket under it then pour it back through 5 or 6 times. Some folks use a garden sprayer. Make sure you let it drain over night before you put it back together.

It is necessary to drain all three places to get most of the water out and even then some will remain in the low places but that small amount should not be a problem.

See the link below for my file on trouble shooting the 8N lift.

yes, the 3-point hitch runs off the same gear oil, or at least the hydraulic pump does. 3 drain plugs in the bottom actually, a common sump, so drain them all (the 4th, in front is for the motor oil).

It takes 90W GL-1 gear oil, I like NAPA # 65-205. Buy the 5 gallon bucket but don't put it all in, might take a couple quarts less. Remove the bottom bolt of the inspection plate on the side, fill with the gear oil until it starts to run out, that's enough. Overfill and it will leak out the rear, spoil your brakes.
