Early 8N sterring box problems

After reading the previous post re: upgrading an early model 8N steering box to the later model I think I need to find a replacement and would like the later model.
I took my FO-4 manual and did the steering adjustments. I have no slack in the steering shaft bearings and no noticeable play in the steering sector bushings. The tightest I could get was about 1/4" movement on the left side and 3/4" movement on the right. Topped off the fluid w/90 wt and adjusted to 1/4" toe in. Problem I had was in 3rd or 4th gear, I have a bad wheel shimmy, now it's not AS bad but it's bad. I assume that my sector gears are worn out of tolerance and I can't find those offered by any of the parts places I've gone to. They have them for the 9/2N and for the later 8N. I'm in central Texas and looking for a later model steering box unless some of you know what I can do to get more slop out of what i have.
Any suggestions as to where to locate a replacement (newer) box?

I had the same problem like yours and the others who posted a response. I replaced the bushings and the left sector was then tight with no play, but it was at the final hole adjustment. The right sector still has about a one quarter play. One way to make it work, although I know this is improper, is to insert a thin piece of metal or gasket material between the housing gasket and the steering box on only the front end of the sector housing. This cocks the sector forward ever so slightly so that a portion of the sector teeth are now closer to the sector teeth on the other more forward sector (or the worm nut if you do this on the left sector). This tightens up the steering alot, but the sector teeth are not now fully flush and may bind a little. Since the sectors are probably shot in any event, you may get several years of service out of the steering before it gets even worse. It is not unsafe in any sense to do this, but I'm sure it will wear down the parts considerably faster than normal. You will also need to smear gasket cement around the gasket to stop any leak from the housing. Try it, if it helps good luck! I have also thought about the possibility of slighly bending the sectors so that they are very slightly tilted forward to make up for the excess wear. I haven't tried that yet. Let me know how you make out.

Ray: I went through the same thing, new bushings, bearings, seals etc. and came to the same conclusion, the sectors were just too worn and they are not available from any place I could find. I found a late model box on line somewhere but I've forgotten where. I also live in central Texas and have been getting parts from B&M Tractor parts in Taylor. They did'nt have one when I needed it but they may have now. The number is 800-356-7155 or 512-352-8515 ask for Doug or Dennis
