8N dies

We're stumped on this one. 1950 8N with only about 30 hours on rebuilt engine dies suddenly with no warning, just like you shut the switch off. Starts easy and sounds great but after working a few minutes or sometimes maybe 30 minutes it just dies. We have replace points, condensor, distributor cap, rotar, plug wires, and coil. Still no help. Also went through the fuel system and can't find any problem. Sometimes if we just wiggle the distributor cap it will start again but only runs for a couple of minutes. Thought maybe the clips that hold the cap on are weak but don't know how to replace them. Anyone have an idea where to go from here?

Dell -- You know, I had thought about that but blew it off. Could be the problem -- I'll get one tomorrow.

Thanks,

Dell -- put on new switch, no help. It ran for 10 minutes and died. Seems to be something heat related because after 20 minutes of so it will start again. This tractor has a 12 volt conversion on it. Could the problem be something related to that?

PM..... .....15-min runtime and 30-min cool-down time is typical gunked-up ignition switch problem. (the difference between 15 & 10 min is? and 30 & 20 min is? NOT much)

Clogged up inside fuel-tank filter screen is usually a 5-min runtime and 15-min refill the carb bowl time. Could be yer problem. Altho you say you checked yer fuel system. Double check by pulling the carb fuel bowl plug and catch the gas in glass mason jar. Does the fuel flow like oldman peeeing? Inspect about 1/2 qt of drained gas for water in gas. Iff'n its "cloudy" could be water in gas problem.

As a general rule, the 1950 8N's sidemount roundcan ignition coil is bullet-proof but the 1950 8N's squarecan frontmount ignition coil is NOT ROBUST!!! Iff'n its a 6-volt coil, 12-volts will make it overheat and short-out in 10-15min runtime but its usually a 4-hr cooldown time before the melted tar insululation is solid and will start right-up.

Iff'n yer using a 12-6 volt converting resistor, that could be yer run-time related problem. Frontmount or sidemount coil, same effect..... ..Dell

Dell: thanks -- pardon my ignorance but where would the 6-12 resistor be located. This conversion was done by previous owner and this is the first problem we've had since rebuilding the engine.
