My 1949 8N will not start or run. I had been mowing for about 1 hour and it just died, 2 weeks ago. It will turn over. It has a front mount distributor. It is getting gas. I took one of the spark plugs out and grounded it. It had spark, but I could not tell how strong, because it was sunny. I replaced the spark plugs. The engine was overhauled about 10 years ago. It has been hard starting for the last 2 years. I only use it to mow about 2 acres, every 3 weeks. I was going to take the distributor out and replace the points and condensor. Any ideas or suggestions to check next. Thanks, Jerry

I don't know if this could be your problem, but last winter I replaced the coil and checked and rechecked everything before I found that the metal tang on the rotor had bent to one side.

Sparky's Rule of Thumb:
red is dead
blue will do
white is all is right

one of the handiest tools I have is a spark plug with a big alligator clip brazed to it.

I have a front mount 1949 N also. The problem I have most with is with points. It appears to me that a good 50% of the new points I buy are junk. I have found the TISCO set makered ATK6FFR works good. The set maked APN12000ABSR fails quickly. The contacts don't line up well and they pit quickly. I also had a problem once with the bushungs on the distributor shaft being worn. With worn bushings the shaft will move sideways and the point gap will vary. Try some new point and check for movement in the shaft. If I even convert to 12 volts and electronic ignition it will due to not being able to find good points. I think they are now all made in Mexico or China. I have gotten good sets and bad sets from the same supplier.

Another thing you might do to try to start a hard starting N is to jump it off with a 12 volt battery.

When jump starting a 6 volt tractor with 12 volts it not necessary to hook the 12 volts to the 6 volts battery at all. As a matter of fact I strongly recommend against it.
Instead hook the 12 volts directly to the frame of the tractor for the ground and with the transmission in neutral and out of the way of the wheels of the tractor so you don't get run over touch the other cable from the 12 volt source to the post on the starter.
By doing it this way you don't even have to worry about the polarity of the batteries or which cable you have to ground or positive to the frame or the starter as the 6 volt system is not interred into at all with the 12 volts. Just turn on the switch and touch the hot cable to the starter post and it will go.

When in doubt as to whether it is ignition or fuel problem causing an engine not to run I always shoot some starting fluid into the intake and see if that will make it run. If so then I look at the fuel system for problems. Of course if it is flooding this test is not the thing to do.

The carbs are bad about getting clogged up with muck and crud. So you may be getting fuel to the carb but not to the engine. Check it out. The passages are very small and have to be cleaned by running a wire through them. You are on the right track though. Replacing the points and condensor. Mostly problems are electrical. The other post mentioned starter fluid. Many people do not use it. I belive in it in very small amounts. Should it run on starter fluid and stop check the carb.

your gettin fuel-your gettin fire-next try a shot of starting fluid, if that doesnt start it next step is to check your compression. post back and let us know. RP
