51 8N transmission cover

A few days ago I posted the odd "breather" or something on my 8N transmission cover. I have posted pictures. At this point, I am planing on removing the dome cover, fabricating a 1" round plug to weld in the hole. Curious as to whether anyone else has seen one like it. Hope the pic post works

I've not seen it before and don't see the need. The tranny can breath via the hole for the gear shift. I'm guessing its a source of tranny fluid leakage.
