Can't believe it started

Last weekend, changed antifreeze in 1950 8n. afterward, it wouldn"t start. looked at coil wire where it plugs into tower on distributor, and had lots of corrosion, very loose, no resistance at all when I pulled it out to check. Assumed would need a new wire before it would start. underestimated the 8n again. After it sat in the hot garage all week (temp 100+ outdoors in the shade every day), I hit the starter this afternoon and it fired right up. Guess it was just wet from splashed water, etc. Now another question. The ammeter always shows a 1 - 2 amp discharge when the tractor is running. Have had tractor for 2+ months now, and doesn"t seem likely that it would still have any charge if the ammeter was right. 6V system. Is it common for them to be calibrated a little off, so maybe I"m really charging a litte while it is showing a discharge?

with motor running, remove a battery cable, if it keeps running its chargeing.

Thanks for the advice. I'll check it out next week end. Also, have gasoline leaking out around the sediment bulb when the engine is shut off but before I can get down to turn off the valve. I bought a new sediment bulb gasket at TSC, and it came with new screen also. So main project for next weekend will be to drain the fuel tank, and replace the sediment bulb gasket and screen. Any advise on anything else I should do while I'm at it? Thanks again to everyone who shares their knowledge on this forum. I pick-up a lot of great information just reading everyone's questions and the answers that get posted.

You shouldn't have to drain tank just to replace bowl gasket if the valve works. Even if the valve seeps a little just work fast and outdoors.

Old oldie, you can savee yourself some trouble if you put the sediment bowl gasket in some gasoline and let it soak overnight before installing it, this will most likely prevent your new one from leaking after installation.

Measure the battery voltage before you start the tractor. Voltage should be 6+ volts if charged. Start the tractor and measure the battery voltage again. It should be higher. If not generator is not charging. Same for 12 volt system just different voltages. If generator is charging the wires are reversed on amp gauge.

Sounds like the amp meter wires are reversed.
With motor off turn on the key, meter should go
negative 3 amps or so if the points are
closed. If no movement, nudge the starter and try it again till the meter moves when key is turned on.

What should happen is when you turn on the ignition or lights the ammeter should show a slight discharge. The needle should swing to the other side of zero after the engine starts. My genny on the 6-volt tractor puts out about 10-Amps at anything over fast idle rpm.
