Haven't tried to adjust the brakes yet on my 1950 8N, but have a bad feeling that it will take more than an adjustment. Have found that there is a used tractor dealer in town that works on N's, and neighbor told me that he is a pretty straight shooter and would be a good place to go and get a brake job done. Question before I start down that path: anyone have any idea what would be a reasonable price to pay for a brake job? I'm pretty sure that this job is beyond me physically - enough back problems, etc., already... Appreciate any ball park estimates anyone can share. Thanks.

Why don't you take off a tire and break drum and have a look? All I had to do on mine is degrease the heck out of them and sand the glaze off the pads. I then removed the lower bolt on the inspection cover( the cover around the gear lube dipstick) and lowered the fluid to this level. This seems to keep the gear lube away from the axel ends without harming the transmission. The break pads didn't look any harder to change than any other drum breaks. Good Luck!

Book time izz .8 hr. per wheel to replace the shoes. Stuck hubs, stuck drum retaining screws, dirty/oily mess time ????? ? Who knows, it kin turn into a job W/mess. DIY you should plan on a day, I would plan on 4hr. I have a original time guide fer’em and no way I would werk on one at the Schedule time listed. Its not like ordering up pancakes and bacon on a menu. Old iron you luv it are hate it. You kin do one wheel at a time theirs plenty of pix in parts and pieces to look at. Your ability and tools will determine iffin you kin do this. Tek’nical advice here izz free, jump on it you kin always put the wheel back on and haul it to yer local mechanic, support yer local mechanic you may need’em sum day. Good luck

You might want to consider getting the rear axel seals replaced when you get the brakes done. If the seals leak it would mess up your new brakes. It would add cost to the job but if you have both done you should not have a brake problem for many years if ever again.

old odie, parts will be 75 to 125 an most of the dealers i have been around are hitting you for 40 to 60 an hr. for shop time so if you get better than that you are probably ok. RP
