I have completed the engine overhaul on my 8N and I started it up the first time.(50psi oil pressure as soon as it fired up, ahhh, gotta love that) I also installed a 12V conversion and had No charge. Can I put a jumper from the 12V wire on the alternator to the R terminal to excite it?

P.S. This is my first engine rebuild and I want to THANK ALL THE EXPERTS ON HERE THAT SAVED MY A$$ A FEW TIMES. THANKS!!!!!

I will also keep ya updated as the process continues.

Nova: I think the other posts have answered your questions, but as a curiosity, what all did you do in your overhaul? I'm facing same and would be interested in your project and any problems you may have encountered. You may e mail me if you wish or answer on the board. Thanx

Don't think that will help. My 8N has a 12V conversion on it, single wire to the BAT terminal is all that's hooked up and it charges fine. I asked the same question an was told it is wired internally to the brushes. Maybe more info would help such as how it is wired, what changes you did, etc. Who ever installed the one on my tractor just did it like it would be if the factory had done it. 12V coil, standard automotive ign. resistor, 12V lights. Very simple and so far has worked great.

Well...I purchased a conversion kit from this web site, 12V Coil, Single wire alternator, resistor. No Charge. at least on my amp meter (not changed)Instructions state a jumper to terminal R my be required if the alternator sits for long periods. Is that a 12V jumper? Ground jumper? not sure.

It's a jumper to 12v just applied for a second or so.

That should excite the alternator. If you leave the tractor sit for long periods of time, it may be necessary to repeat the jumper application.

If you want, you can follow Mountainman's instructions and use the alternator as if it were a standard Delco 10SI.

Hi Nova
I had the same problem with my 12 volt conversion. I had to rev the engine much higher than I felt comfortable with and it was still a 50/50 chance of starting it charging. I hadn’t yet discovered this helpful board so I called an alternator shop. You can get the alternator to charge at much lower RPM by adding two wires (with proper ends) and a 1 amp, 50 volt diode or a #193 or #194 lamp (idiot light).
Run a short wire from the out put terminal on the alternator to the #2 terminal on the side or top of the alternator case. From the #1 terminal, run a wire (with the diode in the proper direction or the lamp in line) to the switched side of the ignition circuit (before any resistors). It worked for me.

Hope this helps.

Are the wires at the amp meter hooked up so the current is flowing correctly through the gauge?
